Pretty cool article about the good ol' 250 Savage. Gentle on the shooter's shoulder, deadly on deer. :)

Sweet little cartridge. I have 3 of them. A savage M1920 made in 1920, a savage 99A lever, and a tang safety Ruger ultra light. Love the first 2, haven't shot the Ruger yet.

If they would've marketed it from the beginning in the 10 twist barrel that it came with later on, instead of the 14 twist that limited it to light bullets, its use and history would be a lot more popular in my opinion. My 1920 has the 14 twist, the other 2 have the 10 twist.

Between my wife and I, we have 2, 250's ( a 77 RSI and a No.1) and a 250 AI (LH Rem 700 rebarreled to the Ackely). Great cartridge(s)! Fun rifles!
Rebarreling a Winchester Model 88 to 250 Savage too!

Note: the link that led to this article, also included a link to an article that also discussed the 250 AI

Worst trade I ever made; traded a Savage 99 250/3000 for a walther PPKS when I was a rookie cop. Needed a back up gun.
Been there. When I was 22 I traded a Win 71 for a paint job on an old Jeep CJ7. It was handed down to me from my uncle when he got too old to get out and go. I think it was built somewhere around 1950-'55. Had no idea how much I would want that 348 Win back.

Good articles both. Not sure I agree with the comparisons with the 243 and the 6.5 Creed (believe that:eek:?) But then I havent shot a 243 on game, and have one only as the back-up/ Donor to the 250. Also, I typically dont push it as hard as some of the loads suggeted in the article - usually. What I do know, is its easy to shoot, seems to be accurate when I am, and has never left me disappointed on game w/ 100gr BT's. Dont think I'd take it after Elk, but then I cant do my own tracking. As some one once said, "A dead Elk can cover a lot of ground before he knows he's done". Thats part of the reason I suspect people often use more gun for the big deer.
An Ackley has always intrigued me, but I'm not an accomplished enough reloader to take full advantage of it. I can do much of what a Roberts does, unless you Ackley that too. Besides, since Winchester didnt make a 25WSM, if you have to go bigger than a 250, you might as well shoot a 25-06 and just live w/ the long action.
XP- I occasionally entertain the idea of a pistol in 250 as that would be legal in the slug zone only where I hunt in MN. Gotta be a serious "cool factor" in that. With that short barrel I'm afraid I'd shoot the side view mirror off the "rolling ground blind" in a moment of "buck fever" though. Cool thanks again. CL

Ive told the sad tale before....I had to pass on a Ruger RSI with a K4 on it, in 250 Savage years ago. Could have had it for 200 bucks...Still bugs me. CL
