Is it possible to get 3000fps from a 22" .270 Win with the Nosler Partition and one of the slower powders, i.e. R26? I have an opportunity to try some in a Mod 700 Mountain rifle a bit later on. From what I can read about it, it seems the 150PT is more of an all around bullet to use on mule deer/elk. I'm sure the 130PT is pure poison on deer and the 140 AccuBond gets good reviews on game. For that matter, you guys who have used them, is the 140 AccuBond even better for all around than the 150PT? While I have some Hornady 150 IB, I am not thrilled with them seeing as how finicky they were in my BAR .270 Thanks

I've long believed that 140 grains is the best bullet weight for the 270... But then I'm primarily a deer hunter and have no experience with elk.

I doubt you'll reach 3,000 fps with a 150 in a 22" barrel.... 2,900 probably about it, and that'll be a warm one.

Maybe something like R17 or even Superformance may be good too. I could certainly live with an accurate 2900fps/150PT. I'm just curious as to these new powders in an old standby. I am one of those who has always taken the .270 for granted as it just "works" on about anything! It's been, to me, so good its just been boring,ha.

I would have to give RL26 a test for this as I have had really good results with it across the board in multiple calibers.

Alliant 2015 data say max it at 60.8 grains with Fed 210 primer and velocity at 3,022 in 24" barrel with 150 Partition.

Bet you can stay good on pressures to near 2,900 in 22" barrel.

But my bullet pick would be the 140ab in a 22" barrel and run with RL23.

Alliant data for the 150pt with RL23 is max at 57.1 grains at 2,953fps so should be good to start at like 55-56 grains with 140ab and check speeds.

Maybe some QL help too? Should be able to reach near 3,075 with the 140.

The 150 gr PT would be a great an around bullet in the 270 Win covering everything from mice to moose.
3000 fps may be a challenge but 2900 fps + would still be a game killer.

I have been loading for my 270win for over 40 years and I have never used any bullet other that the 130gr Partition or the 130 AB. my bullet speed was just touching 3000fps. The rifle I used was a BDL and a 22" barrel. My CDL has a 24" barrel and I am seeing speeds of 3050 to 3075fps. I have anchored numerous Moose & Elk with those two bullets.
Now 2 years ago my son anchored a mature cow Moose using his 270win and was shooting 150gr. ABLRs speed was just under 2800fps but that was not playing with it at all as we were in a hurry & took the first load that showed a 1"moa.
He has since gone back to the 130gr AB & has anchored a real heavy bodied Whitetail that was around the 200lb mark and a Muley that likely weighed 50lbs more then the Whitetail.
We are now playing with the 150gr. ABLRs with our new 270WSM and I actually have 150gr. Norma Onyx arriving shortly.

Blessings,
Dan

Quick load shows a .270 win in a 22" barrel can do 3000 with Norma MRP and N560. Thats at 65000 psi.

Last summer I talked to a guy who lived on and hunted on Kodiak Island for 20+ years. He used a 270 Win with 150gn Partitions for everything that wasn't a bear. I suppose if he had an unexpected encounter with a bear he had the right type of bullet, not necessarily a big enough one. He had all his limbs and fingers so he must not have been beaten up too badly.

Jim, I'd think 3000 would be leaning on the 270 Win in a 22" barrel pretty hard. 2900 would be easily attainable with a bunch of powders though. I have used the 140 AB out of my 270 WSM on elk and mule deer. It is a fine bullet. I like the 150 PT more, but just because I think it's better on larger front leg bones than an AB is. Truth is, both work the same and it's all in my noggin.

Heck, a great bullet is the 150 BT at 2900 in a 270 Win. That bullet is very tough, and will penetrate just as far as the 140 AB does. In the plain old 270 Winchester, it is a great bullet.

I load for a buddy with his .270 and 130 gr. Partitions and he's taken a lot of elk, several bulls, with his .270 and that load. His son is now using it. I think the 140 gr. AccuBond or Partition would be great and I would pick which one shot best. I think you could get 3000 fps in your MTN rifle without undue pressures and it will work very well for you. The 150 would also, but I just think that the 140 gr. weight just seems to be in a sweet spot for the 270, but then the 130 gr. is Classic!

I absolutely love the 150 gr. PT and BT in my .270 Win. They have killed several animals quite nicely. My buddy uses the 140 gr. AB with absolutely no complaints. Pick one and go for it! You wont be disapointed!

Thanks guys...back in the early 80's, I loaded the .270 for a buddy of mine ( a died in the wool 30-06 man) I loaded both the Speer 130 Boat Tail and the 130 Hornady SP. I told him to only use the Speer loads on our little SE Texas whitetail, that the Hornady was a "harder" bullet. Yep, he got them mixed up, used the Hornady and popped a doe right at dark, behind the shoulder. She spun and was in the thicket 40yds away pronto. It was raining softly so "No blood trail". My friend is a great game shot too, so I trust him when he said he hit her. He is not the type to ever shoot an eating deer through the shoulders either. He never found that doe and he never, ever, hunted with that .270 again! He still has it, one of the first Browning Abolts. ha The last few .270s I had/played with, I just used the Federal 130BT or the 140 Superformance for my Godsons rifle.
Could someone look up in QL what the projected 140AB and 150PT will do with R22 through R26 in a 22" Mountain rifle? Thanks. Jim

I ran these with a 64k max on the group shots

Thanks Pard! I just got in several pounds of R26 and it looks like I am going to have to start with it! I got this rifle from a fellow in OR who said it got great accuracy with the Nosler 130PT and H4831sc ( which I don't have.) If I can get the speeds of the above with accuracy, OMG! ha

Here they are with RL26. I modified the burn rate on the RL26 to about what I experienced with it over the weekend. As always, work up.
If you shoot some with RL26 and your rifle, chrono a few of the loads and get a case capacity and we can fine tune this a little.
