I enjoyed loading for my friends .270 so much that I ended up buying one myself. Picked up a Vanguard S2. Will be going out again around Nov 1st and have tags for WT deer, elk and black bear.
Wondering what bullet weight I should go with? Would the 140gr be best?

Boomer. As I recall, 1973 was a banner year for buying guns for me anyway.IIRC, I acquired something like 6 different rifle and a couple of handguns. That also was the year I got my first .270. Worked a trade than where I ended up with a commercial Mauser in .270 for $75.00 and it was new in the box. I shot a few coyotes and a couple of deer with various factory and handholds but didn't much care for the somewhat mangled results, especially if I hit a shoulder. One of my hunting partners father and I were talking and he said he used 150 gr. bullets exclusively. I tried them and felt the results were an improvement. I forget the charge but I used the Sierra 150 gr. Game King and milsurp 4831 back then. Didn't use that rifle much for one reason or another, probably because another toy came my way. In fact over the years I ended up with three more .270's, ran a few handholds through the and into the back of the safe. I came across a deal where I got 32 pounds of the now long discontinued Winchester magnum Rifle powder (WMR) worked up to the max load with the Sierra Game King and got close to 2900 FPS and groups ranging from .50" to .75" depending on how well I was shooting on any particular day. The only exception to those tight groups is the Ruger #1A which barely holds on at one inch. The neat thing was two years ago I decided to take one of the .270's on my elk hunt and thanks to the components shortage had to switch to a different bullet. I had a bunch of 150 gr. Nosler Partitions on hand so dropped back and worked back up to the original load used with the Sierra bullet and groups were just as tight with the Nosler as with the Sierra. On the Sierra 150 gr. bullet, my hunting partner on our elk hunt two years ago shot a cow elk at roughly 110 yards, give or take. Entrance was about one inch and the exit about three inches. Cartridge was the .270 WSM. I did shoot an antelope with the Siera back in 2009 at 75 yards. Bullet hit right at the short ribs and exited right be hind the right shoulder. The "goat" took a short thirty foot half circle and expired. Entrance was about an inch and exit about 1.5" or a bit larger. The few deer I shot were back in the mid 1970's so I don't much recall damages other than I felt the 130's were a bit excessive. I don't recall if anybody was even making a 140 gr. bullet back then.
I don't know about the 140 gr. bullet to be honest. The good results I've gotten from the Sierra and Nosler bullets have kind of put me in a rut that has been too successful to want to change. Kind of, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." For powders? Probably one of the 4350's, 4831's 7828 is supposed to be good and possibly Re22.
This all kind if boils down to while I like the .270, I just don't use it much. Guess I should try and change my evil ways.

I think the 140 gr. AccuBond would be fantastic.

I shoot one of 3 .270's in my family. I shoot the 150 gr. Ballistic tip for everything up to elk. From elk on, I switch over to the 150 gr. Partition. I get really good accuracy with both and my Weatherby S2 has not let me down. I love that gun! I use H 4831 for both.

Good luck with your set up and on your hunts!

I'm a relative newcomer to the .270... that said, nothing wrong with any of the 130-150gr bullets. They'll all work.

I'm shooting 130gr Trophy Bonded at 3100fps in mine... I haven't done much killing with it but I did back up a buddy on a caribou at 450yds. Put the bull down and exited after shattering a femur. Works for me.

I'd probably stay away from the softer 130gr bullets if you expect a close shot...other than that there are likely any number of great bullets. The 140AB is likely as good of an all around bullet in the .270 as there is made by anyone. If your shooting tends to be long the 140gr BT is a slightly cheaper alternative with a good track record.

The 140 AB is a great bullet. Moreover, go with what your rifle shoots best. It just might be a 150gn bullet vs the lighter ones......your rifle will let you know. I met a guy who lived on and hunted Kodiak Island for about 20ish years and his 270 Win was always loaded with 150gn Partitions.

Good question. For all around do everything the high BC of the 140 AB would certainly get my attention. .496 BC is impressive. A new vanguard with the 24 inch barrel and the 140 AB would make a nice combo. 3000 plus would be no problem. (y)

I picked up some 150gr PT and plan to try with H4831. Also have some Speer GS.

Tough to beat the 150 gr PT. H4831 and RL22 would be great powders to start with.

I look forward to your load workup Mr boomer! I have loaded for a couple guys .270s and owned several through the years. One guys rifle was for Texas WT so the 130gr/Speer was used, 60/H4831, which also works in my present BAR .270 with 130 BT. The other is for my Son in Laws rifle, a Mod 700 .270 with R22/140AB. I don't have my notes for it. I used the old Winchester factory load 140 Failsafe in my BAR for my Godson to shoot a big Spanish goat. I also used R26 behind the 150BT in that BAR for a tad over 3000fps! It was only 1.5 in the BAR and it got me stirred up. I went out and bought a new CDL in .270 so I could really wring the .270 out with 150 and 160NPs. I would think H4831 will work great for you. I have never read nor ever heard someone say ( the .270 is real popular here in Utah) anything bad about the 150gr bullets, from roundnose Corlokts, factory Fusions, to Partitions...it seems the 150gr is a real killer. Good luck to you!

The 150 Partition shoots pretty darn good from my Model 70's short barrel using Norma MRP and IMR-7828ssc. Both push 3000 fps.

In my experience with the 270win which is about 45 years worth ! I would shoot 130gr. Accubonds & would not be afraid to shoot anything from Coyotes to Moose.
If you are shooting under 300 yards I would also look at the 130gr. Partition which isn't a bad second choice!!

Blessings,
Dan

The 130g Nosler Partition will do just about all you want.

Try it with 55-57g of H4350 and any standard LR primer.

Also love the 150g Interlock, with a full case of H4831SC.

I've also be using R17 with 130 to 150g bullets of late in the 270 Win. It is just as good as the above two powders for speed and accuracy IMO.

I was thinking of this thread this weekend. Saturday I dropped by the local Sports Wharehouse , just browsing for some 90gr .270 bullets. Since our deer season is on us, I thought I'd check ammo availability. Ha! The ONLY 270 and 30-06 available was high end Nosler ammo. No Winchester, Remington, Federal nor Hornady! No 30-30 of any kind. Just a few 243 and only High end 7mm Rem mag. Seems the local guys prefer the old standbys, especially in ammo. I wonder how many of those guys will use a different weight bullet than the one they sighted in with, ha. I've seen that so many times both in Texas and here, seems universal.
