well scotty, as you know you were the only one who responded to my question in a different conversation, so let me try it here

We plan to let our 275 and 300 H & H s hunt on our next sheep hunt and was curious what others were loading in their 275 and 300 H & H. We are currently using the Woodleigh and with no complains, but like I said we were curious what others are using. I do not do our reloading, all our reloading is done my my grandfather and he was also wondering if he had gotten into a rut with woodleigh and perhaps there is something new on the market

I'd run Partitions they will help out a bit if you get a longer shot with a higher BC. I don't know what range your shooting at but that's what I would do.

Cheyenne, I am sorry not sure if I saw your previous post.
I do not shoot either one of those calibres so I would not be of any help to you.
I do think they are both super cool calibres as I shot the 375 H&H for a number of years. If I was going to build another custom I would sure take a look at the 275 .
I look forward to following this post and also for photos and a good story or two about your up coming hunts.

Blessings,
Dan

I've had excellent accuracy from the 165gr AccuBond in my 300H&H. It's a tough bullet with a decent BC that zips along a little over 3100fps in my load. Check out H4350 with the 165gr. I would think that combo would be a good choice for sheep hunting.

I've also had extremely accurate results with the 185gr Berger hunting VLD. I did take an elk with one and it was very dead but lost more meat than I like to due to blood shot on the off side of the animal.

Love my 300H&H....such a capable and neat old cartridge!

thank you for your response sir

we hunt the mackenzie mountain range which have nice herds of dall. we have never had to shoot over three hundred yards when hunting them in the past. The partitions are an excellent bullet for the 300 I am sure and perhaps we will try them. Does nosler make anything for the 275 ?

Dan, we dont usually take pictures and never post them as we got into DEEP do do in the past as many here are aware. Also, just so you can get a little laugh here as well. The people in our village might laugh us out of the village if I said I shot a caribou ( or fill in the animal ) today, would someone come take a picture of me with it (-:.

Anyway, back to the question at hand--who besides woodleigh makes a 287 bullet ? for the 275. Dr Mike what bullet do you use in the newton sir ?

shoots5 and kodiak, thank you

Cheyenne,

Just saw this. I'm not checking posts as diligently as I should. I'll correct that soon (I hope). I run either Woodleighs or DKT. I'm skinny on DKT right now, but they are occasionally available (at a price) here in Canada. Hawk markets a 160 grain .287 bullet, but I've not ordered any Hawk bullets in a long time. Quality was somewhat uneven in years past.

Dr Mike,

Thank you sir! I will pass this along to my grandfather. I also found out out that Kodiak in Alaska will make them. Maybe I can get Sean's daughter to bring me a box or two in her canoe (-;

I am curious as to why more people dont have the 275. Like Dr Mike's Newton they are are pretty cool caliber (s)

anyway, thank you gentlemen time for me to get off the computer and back to work

I load my Model 70 pre War with a Max load of IMR 4350 and Nosler 180gr AB right out of Nosler's Mannual and for a 75+ year old rifle it's close to MOA at 100 yds. Just FYI I use to shoot 180 Partition before with the same groups, I just did not like the flatten tips from recoil, is why I changed
I also never reloaded anything lighter because with Winchesters 180gr. Silvertip it was also Right at MOA but with Winchester 150gr. Silvertip groups were quite larger, so I have just stuck with 180gr.
Smoothest action and feeding rifle I own.

I'd love a Pre64 300 H&H of any vintage. Magnificent rifles made for hunters and I haven't seen many that don't shoot really well.

+ 1

I was weaned on a pre war model 70 300 H &H shooting 180 gr bullets. It is still today my go to rifle for all but the most dangerous of game. I have tried smaller grained bullets in it but always return to the 180.

Cheyenne, I also have a 275 H & H and enjoy it, but to answer your question about it and the newton, they are a lot harder to find bullets for, making them more difficult and more expensive to load than others that give you basically the same results. I personally like the 275 Rigby and 7-08, but even the 7mm will do everything the 275 H & H will do. I know you got it to complete your set of H & H's ( 275, 300, and 375 ) and that alone is a darn good reason to have one, at least in my opinion, others here might disagree

Best Regards

Jamila

p.s. for those of you waiting on the delivery of goods from Africa. They are clearing customs in the states as we speak and should be to you soon. Sorry for the delay but between your requests and my parents demands on me, I have no social life lol

Social life is highly over-rated, Jamila.

Always good to see you and your mother posting. (y)
