280 Ack N-165

A while back a requested. QL for the 280AI and N165 for the 143 hammer hunter. Dr Mike and RL338 provided the projections. I did run into pressure well before what QL and GRT projected, but the velocity was on par. I got to work on it the last couple of days, and I’m glad I have a good supply of N165! 63.0 did excellent for me. I also shot 62.5 and the group opened up a smidge, but that was probably me. This Savage 110 has a 22” tube, so the speed is very good. It’s been bedded and a round of Tubbs bullets put through it is all that’s been done to it.

I'd say you have a fine load there. That will stand you in good stead on about any game you would ever hunt in NA. Excellent work.

It was not shot off the bipod, I used my new Bullsbag and a Caldwell rear bag.

Yep. I could tinker with OAL to try to shrink the group, but I don’t know that I’m capable of shooting any tighter, and in the real world out hunting , any further improvement wouldn’t make a real difference .

I owe you a big thanks for recommending the bulls bag! I do have to set it on top of a thick, firm cushion to get the height right for me, but it’s rock solid, and allows the rifle to recoil naturally all while soaking up some recoil energy. Best I’ve used.

Glad you like it. It's solid as you found out.
A wooden base would be more stable than a cushion resulting in even better accuracy.

Haha! As much as I like the hammers, the bag sure helped this old cuss shoot better. They say they’re insensitive to seating depth, but I don’t have any experience yet. I load them to where the first band is just inside the case neck by about .030” so the LFCD crimps in the “shank” and not the band. Purely arbitrary measurements on my part. But that puts them Jumping .060”

I haven't found them to be picky at all on seating depth. I think mine changes ever so slightly every time I load them and it's all the same POI as the last batch. Just my small sample size though
