300 Weatherby advice

I recently picked up a nice Model 70 Winlite in 300 Weatherby. I hope to start working up some loads for it after the first of the year. I'm thinking about using it on elk next fall. I am leaning towards 180 or 200 gr. Accubonds, but any good ideas on a 165 gr. would be seriously considered. I'm curious as to what powders have worked the best for you in this cartridge.

Any help will be very much appreciated! Merry Christmas!

Steve

POP,

Dang, that was fast! Thanks so much! You're the best!

Merry Christmas to you and yours,

Steve

All that info POP gave you is great, but my personal 300 Wby Mag will not shoot 200 grain Accubonds worth a damn.

I have used 180 Nosler Partitions in my 300 Wby for years but when the Accubonds came out with that great B.C. and all the other claims I just had to try them. I used a great article by Layne Simpson in Shooting Times as a reference and was anxious to see what the Accubonds would do. Well, they did not shoot well at all for me.

I had similar results with the first 225 grain .338 caliber Accubonds that I tried. (In FIVE rifles) But, I digress.

No amount of fiddling with powders, primers, bullet seating depths, etc. would make the Accubonds work for me. I have since had good results with Accubonds in other calibers and weights, but the first ones out shoot very poorly in my guns.

In a 300 Wby Mag I still think it is darned hard to find a better bullet than the 180 grain Partition. I used it once again on a 6x6 bull elk this fall and it worked great.

I have tried a number of powders in several 300 Wby Mag rifles and keep getting the best results with either H 4831 or RL 22.

I highly suggest NOT mixing Weatherby and Remington brand cases. They are both good products, but they are different! The Remington brass has a good deal less powder capacity. Use one or the other, but not both with the same load.

R Flowers,

Thanks for the info. I find your comments concerning the accuracy problems with the Accubonds most interesting. Generally, I've found that if a rifle won't shoot a Ballistic Tip or an AccuBond, that there is most likely something wrong with the rifle.

I had one particular problem rifle that wasn't very consistant with either the Ballistic Tip or the AccuBond When I tried other bullets, it was even worse. But, that is an example of one, which doesn't prove a lot.

A very good friend of mine builds rifles for a living. One of his favorite cartridges he chambers is the 300 Weatherby, because he says he has very little problem finding a load that shoots well in them. One of his favorite bullets is the 180 AccuBond. Interestingly, his next favorite is the 200 Partition. He says he has seen both 300 Weatherbys and 300 Win Mags shoot that bullet very well.

I also appreciate the information concerning the brass. I am currently laying in a supply of Weatherby brass. I will be very sure not to mix them with other brands.

Thanks again for sharing and Merry Christmas.

Steve

Q for those more knowledgable than I: Norma makes Weatherby's brass. Can data for one be used for the other?

POP,

Thanks for the 180 gr. load data! I guess we must have posted simultaneously last night, and I didn't see it until this morning.

I also noticed on Midway's reviews of the 200 AccuBond, that you are apparently very fond of that bullet in large cased 30 cals.

Thanks for all of your help and Merry Christmas.

Steve

BK, since Norma makes Weatherby brass I am pretty certain that you could interchange Norma headstamped and Weatherby headstamped brass with no issues.

I am amazed at the difference brass can make in loads. A friend's 7mm Rem Mag that I load for gives about 75 fps faster velocity on the chronograph when using Remington brass versus Norma.

Another friend just brought me another 7mm Rem Mag to fool with saying that "it won't shoot anymore". Well, after I cleaned the barrel for over an hour and got most of the copper out, I took it to the range to see. At the range I discovered that he had Federal, Remington, and Winchester brass all mixed together in the box. I purposely shot groups with mixed headstamped brass and got groups well over 2 inches. I then shot groups
(with his ammo) being sure to only use one brand of brass and got groups well under an inch.

In my 300 Wby Mag if I use RL 22 and the 180 Partition or Sierra Pro Hunter, I have to back the powder charges off 1.5 grains in the Remington cases.

My 30-378 shoots the 200 ab at 3275 fps and shoots them in .8" at 200 yards. I will not look for another bullet! Good penetration, great expansion, awesome BC.

R Flowers,

I couldn't agree more about the different types of brass. This became very evident to me a few years ago. I was using some Lapua brass in a couple of rifles. When I went back to a more common brand, there was a very noticeable difference on the targets.

This will be the first time I've used Norma (Weatherby) brass. I've always heard it is excellent. I'm looking forward to trying some. I no longer buy cheap brass if I really want to wring out a rifle. The little extra I've paid for better brass has never been a mistake in my mind.

Steve

Bullet and CZ,

Thanks for the load suggestions. I'm glad to see RL22 has worked for both of you. I have a 5 lb. jug of it, and I have always had great luck with that particular powder. That's great news to me.

Thanks again,

Steve

POP,

Your 30-378 is a hummer with 200 Accubonds! If I were you, I'd give that bullet a 5 star rating as well. Mighty good shooting!

I'm curious as to what powders have worked the best for you in this cartridge

Wally, I too have a model 70 in 300 wby. I have found it to reach pressures and velocities 2 grains below Noslers book. Mine has a plastic stock which makes it hard to get a good bedding job and can cause some real accuracy problems. Leave the front guard screw a little loose and anchor it with blue Loctite. My best load is 81 gr 7828ssc 200 AB @ 3050fps. This may be too hot for others so don't just jump in and use it!

Is that with a 24 inch barrel or a 26 inch barrel

That is with a 26" barrel and R-P brass.
