My bro is wanting to put a new barrel on his 308, and is wondering why 30-06 and 300s have a 1:10 and the 308s have a 1:12? I'm guessing because the bigger 308 cals will be shooting longer heavier bullets on a regular basis, and that the 308 really doesn't shoot anything over a 165-180?

He was also wondering if there would be any advantage or diss advantage of a 1:11 twist. He shoots 130 Gr Ttsx and rearly shoots anything over 150gr.

The slower the twist, the less stress placed on the bullet. Many of your bench shooter will use the slowest twist they can, that will still stabalize their bullet of choice. Of course the longer the bullet, the faster the required twist.

I put a 1/13 twist on a 30-06 for light bullets other 30-06 all have 1/11 twist in those barrels I use either 180gr or 165gr bullets.

What I always do is call afew barrel guys and see what they say as to twist on the bullets I want to use.

I did a 1/12 twist on the 300WSM/30-338mag and I used a 1/10 twist on another 30-338mag.

In my rifles accuracy isn't a problem the twist for me is velocity gain with that one bullet.

I own afew rifles in the same caliber but with different twist so I have my own reloading data. I try and match twist to the bullet I want to use and if I was to build a 308 using 130/150gr bullets I more than likely use a 1/14 or 1/15 twist.

I just had a 257Wby build used a 1/9 twist for the 115gr to 120gr bullets.

We all do things different most time I'll use two bullet weight in a given twist.

On my 308 I had a 1 and 10 on the factory barrrel and it handled anything from the 110gr. v-max to the 175 match bullets, those v-max shot a little over MOA at 300 from that 10 twist barrel. I had my new barrel built with a 1-12 twist because I really didnt have a need to shoot anything bigger than a 175, it puts 168s into a 1.5" groups at 300 yrds. Just for fun I found some old 110gr. v-max that I loaded for my old barrel that chambered in my new barrel and put them down range on sunday, got .6" at 100 and a 2" group at 300 with them. Based on my experience I would say 1-12 twist would be good for what he wanted, it shoots the light bullets real good and also the heavier ones.

Before anyone jumps my but about shooting loads from my old barrel to this one, those were starting loads I was shooting not worked up loads from my old rifle.
