Someone mentioned the 250's out of the Newton, so I figured I would check them out. I said I wasn't going to, but really, who believed me when I said that anyhow..

Here was an example of what it was doing at 200 yards.

75 grains RL17, CCI250, 3.390" and the Nosler 250 PT.

2895, 2901, 2881, and 2911.. I think I could work with this a little.

We shall see Bill. I have some varying seating depths worked up so the next time out we shall see what they do. I really like the idea of the 250 PT around 2850 or so. That's big medicine in my mind.

35 cal 250 going 2850 would be bad ju-ju for any elk that got in it's path.

Scotty after seeing your posts and the nosing around I have done the more intrigued I am about the 35 Newton. That is just one heck of a azz kicker round.

That's the plan Bill. It is shaping up to be "the elk rifle". Seems to be a work in progress but I am getting close.

Time willing I will practice alot with this rifle and the 338 once the McMillan shows up. Both of them are shooting MOA elk pretty easily.

A friend here loaned me a Turner sling for the rifle.. Pretty fun getting snapped back in with a sling!

Although I don't believe I will be trying to shoot crosslegged with the sling. Little too much neck to get in the VX6's way!

It felt great prone and open legged sitting though!

Bill, it is a really cool round man. I am really digging it..

Here are the loaded rounds with the 250 PT's.

I even made a Hornady LNL case for the Newton..

I don't know Scotty. Setting crosslegged looks like a good way to fully check the eye relief on that VX-6.

HA! Yeah, soon as I folded my legs together and got behind the rifle I could "feel" the presence of the scope was entirely too close!

Yeah, I hope the fever sticks Bill. It is a fun cartridge for sure. Hornady 375 brass seems very good. Haven't hurt a piece of it yet, accuracy seems to be there as well. Being it's a rebore it wasn't like the rifle was accurized a bit so it's doing pretty well. I would imagine a full on bolt gun that was trued with a quality barrel would be excellent.

Scotty you are right in your element my friend  once you grab onto something you are not going to let go until you have it the way you want it.
That is a great looking rifle and with that VX6 on top she looks like she is all business!!! Thank you for the range report with photos.
I heard rumor that the Elk have heard about that Newton and they are getting nervous !!

Blessings,
Dan

Thanks Dan. Appreciate it. I am loving this big 35 though. It is everything I have always wanted. Can't wait to take it hunting, that is for sure!

That is not too bad for first 4 250's, just curious if backing them down a bit in velocity would be answer to tightening them up a tad? Only reason I was thinking this is the Nosler book feels 2600 fps area is best for velocity for 250's ? I would think a 250 would be optimum for a 35 cal and a couple more twerks and it will be as fine as Michelle Wei ? Oops I hope it will shoot as good she does! LMAO !

I do miss my little 350 rem mag and the 35 Newton out runs it by quite a margin.

Looks good Scotty. As Bill mentioned, the 250 gr PT at 2850ish is potent elk medicine.
Slam one into the jugs. I'm guessing 7-8.

Scotty, I forgot to ask you about that the flip ups on the VX6 are they after market or actual Leuy made? Does it have the 42mm objective?

Blessings,
Dan

They are made by Leupy. I am having a helluva time keeping the rear one tight. Can't seem to lock it down enough but they are nice. The Leupold emblem did already come off the front cap though. The Newton must have been too much for it to stand.

My 35 Whelen runs the 250 PT at 2600, so I don't plan on slowing it down that much Terry. It should run an easy 2800 or so. I have backed them off some to work the seating depths on them, but I don't think they will take much to shoot well. It is a really accurate bullet in my Whelen.

Oh yeah, without a doubt Jim. I think the Whelen did 7 jugs at 2650, so unless something else happens, it should easily smoke through them. Might have to switch over to 5 gallon pails! HA!

I think you can work with that as well. Your ES looks good, and I'd bet adjusting the OAL a bit would tighten that up some, as well as your groups.

Good Job!

Thanks buddy. I already loaded up some stuff to retest at shorter OAL's so I think it'll turn a corner. I am betting I will have it ready before too awfully long.

Scotty,
Anything in 35 cal is cool for me. You certainly have a super cool Newton there buddy and it should put the Smack down on any Elk you encounter.

Don
