35 Newton 250 PT RL17

I often have difficulty getting the flip-up caps to stay tight. That looks like a great setup. I could live with that load.

It is hard not to experiment especially when the bullets are sitting right there. I can't think of much that couldn't be hunted successfully with your Newton and the 225 gr AB, 250 gr PT and 270 gr NF. I know of at least three local grizzly areas that your short barreled Newton would be just perfect, shots are very close and the brush very thick and a guy wonders how sane he is when out there doing it :)

I shoot sitting with legs crossed but I am about 3/4's your size. The cross legged position is nearly as good for me as sitting at the bench to at least 300 yards but to each his own. We have to allow our bodies to tell us what will work. Nice looking rifle BTW.

Thanks fellas. I have some of the PT's loaded and ready to shoot. It is hard to get decent range days right now with the heat and sun, but when I see something decent in the forecast I will be back at it.

Gerry, I couldn't help it. The AB's shoot well so I figured it wouldn't hurt to run some PT's as well. I really am a fan of the PT so if that works as well as the AB, I will save those for the Whelen and run the PT's in the Newton.

Charlie, I will work around both a little once I get the loads squared away. I wanna make sure I have solid loads first, then I will get to the ground and do the real work.

That's my stunt double!

Can't be your "stunt double"; he's not hirsute.

Man, I'm always looking words with you around Mike!

Oh, I'm like a sheared dog now! Feel like I'm 10 years younger.

New job new look?

Same job, but moved up to HQ. Now I sit next to the flag pole. The Marine Corps ALWAYS gets theirs! It just took them 18 years to get me, but they are in it for the marathon, not the sprint!

Man I only hope GQ mag doesn't get a hold of those pictures. It will be hell trying to sneak in on a herd of elk with the paparazzi in tow.

Me too, couple of lucky guys here.

I was wondering how long it would take the Corps to de-dreadlock you after you made top? The Corps is like the Army in that they always have their way! You are getting a new post assignment soon too, aren't you?

Already checked back into Camp Lejeune. I am back up in Va right now. I am staying in my RV in NC until I retire. Family maintained our place up here some I a traveling dad for a couple of years.

Well, I went out yesterday and shot some varying seating depths at 200 yards with the 35 Newton.

3.365" was the clear winner. Some of the others were good, but this one took the show.

I am calling this good enough. The Newton isn't a bench gun by any stretch, so I am going to load up a bunch and get on the ground with it.

I tried to catch a 250 PT in the jugs as well. I slipped it out of #8. I was a little irate. It went fully through 7 and skimmed the side of #8.

That is a fine group for 200 yards, it looks like you are closing in quickly on something great. RL 17 sure has been working well for you in a number of cartridges, looks to be a keeper. If I can get the ejection issue sorted out on my 358 Norma it would be nice to try the 250 gr PT in it as well, the Speer's were looking promising.

I would like to try the Speers in the Newton. Should make a good hunting bullet as well as a less expensive practice load. I like those 250 Speers a bunch.

Yeah, 17 has been very good for me so far.

Scotty, it looks like you have found a great load. That is some fine shooting @200 yards, the Elk should be a wee bit nervous when you have that Newton in your hands.
I am wondering if your 338 is going to get lonely ?

Blessings,
Dan

Nah, the 338 will get plenty of hunting time. They both are working very well for me.
