I was wondering how long it would take the Corps to de-dreadlock you after you made top? The Corps is like the Army in that they always have their way! You are getting a new post assignment soon too, aren't you?

Already checked back into Camp Lejeune. I am back up in Va right now. I am staying in my RV in NC until I retire. Family maintained our place up here some I a traveling dad for a couple of years.

Scotty, I commuted from LA to San Diego everyday for 2-1/2 years, I feel for you buddy. It will be worth it at the end.

The 338 WM and the 35 Newton--that is a combination that will just flat work! Can't imagine anything living in NA that would require more. The Newton is more than adequate; that is a fine group for 200 yards.

I would say ya found the sweet spot for sure, a 250 will make many Wapaiti travel very far once they know you have arrived in the area! Nice 200 yard shooting and that would drop any brown bear that made the mistake of thinking you were an afternoon snack! Not a lotta folks carrying that size caliber here in the lower 48 and you now have 2 sweet loads worked up which are both going to be deadly! Congrats!

Thank you Terry. It's a solid load and seems to work well with the rifle. I am sure it'll be more than excellent on elk.

That is a haul! I figure I will slip home on weekends and such when I can. I have less than 2 years remaining till I retire, so It'll be nice when I am done.

Mike, the 35 Newton has been EXCELLENT. Highly recommend it for a guy wanting a heavy hitter in the above 30 cal. It isn't a Super Duper LR range rifle by any stretch but it'll be a great hunting rifle for my purposes I think.

It will reach out plenty far to bring down game in my AO. Ballistically, it looks like a 358 Norma Magnum; and that's no slur on the rifle.

Well, I went out yesterday and shot some varying seating depths at 200 yards with the 35 Newton.

3.365" was the clear winner. Some of the others were good, but this one took the show.

I am calling this good enough. The Newton isn't a bench gun by any stretch, so I am going to load up a bunch and get on the ground with it.

I tried to catch a 250 PT in the jugs as well. I slipped it out of #8. I was a little irate. It went fully through 7 and skimmed the side of #8.
Not a bench rest rifle, but man that thing is shooting good. It seems the more you shoot it the better it gets.

Do you think JES would open up the bolt on my M70 to handle the Newton or is the action too short since it's a standard long and not a magnum?

I have no idea Rodger. I think you'd have more work since the case is a 375 Ruger you'd have to change your magazine around as well. You'd have to get a Win Mag or H&H box, follower and spring as well. Pretty easy stuff to swap around, but I am still not sure how it would feed. This is one of the rounds that makes the CRF shine a little brighter in my eyes, but I am sure anything can be made to work properly.

Just a quick heads up, I had to send the rifle back into JES. I was getting a ring around the shoulder on all of my cases and extraction felt sticky on the last little bit of bolt lift on every single load I tried. I should have followed my gut on it, and sent it back straight away, but I haven't ever ran a rebore before.

Then, one day at the range, there was just enough here the extractor wouldn't pull the case free and stuck it. So, I went home, tapped the case outta the chamber, tried a second time and stuck another. They weren't really stuck, but there was some sorta burr on the shoulder area along with the ring around the shoulder.

I was also getting some lighter rings around the case body.

So, I called JES, he said send him some cases and the rifle. When the fellas sent the rifle in for me the first time, they only had some dummy rounds I loaded and they weren't trimmed enough for him to test fire. Not really anybodies fault on it, just the way it happened.

This time, with proper cases and such, he was able to see the barrel needed to be set back one thread in order for the reamer to clean the chamber up all the way from it's original 338 Win Mag status..

Needless to say, I got the rifle back yesterday, remounted the scope, took my known good loads to the range. I did a rough zero at 25 yards and then took it out to 200 yards with the sling. I shot two at a time since I didn't wanna heat the barrel up ton's. I plunked the first two about 10" low, did a dope change and commenced shooting the paper plate.

Everything is GOOOD. It extracts perfectly, the accuracy is still as good as it was when I worked up the load and I am happy! I am a much happier camper now. This rifle will be a good hunting rifle I think. It is accurate, runs the 250 PT's out pretty quick and is very accurate. I can't wait to take it out to 400 and 500 yards to check my drops. Might not be a true flatliner, but it should make an excellent elk rifle.

Scotty I know you were anxious when you had to send it back but glad to here everything is fixed and running good.
Oh by the way when I got the bottom metal for my M70 it turned out to be for a magnum with the magnum follower, box and spring, so that part would be good to go. I'm going to work with the Whelen before I take on another project.

How could I have overlooked This thread?.

Thanks Scotty for sharing your results. I have Always been a fan of Charles Newton and his cartridges. The .35cal was among the better ones.

Do you have the book by Bruce Jennings" Newton, the father of high velocity"?. If you don't have it go search. It is a great bible on his developments and at the same time an interesting(important) American gun history.

I can only praise when someone picks up on obsolete cartridge and brings it back for activ use.

Thank you fellas. It's good to have it back.

RM I will look for that book. Sounds like something I'd like to have.

Might have to see if I can borrow that book. It's a little spendy for me right now.

Mike I can't wait to shoot it some more. I ordered a Williams extractor just in case but it's working real slick now.
