What do you all think about this? You can still get cases, it is a rare bird, but very easily chambered in the 300 Win Mag length action. It looks pretty impressive on paper and I can't imagine many having one? Just thinking through some things... I always kinda liked the Newton stories of old..

Yeah, but you can't go scoping that rifle. It's against the rules. You gotta' keep it period authentic.

Scott, I found cases from Quality Cartridge, they are somewhat pricey, but I would think an initial buy of 100-200 cases would last me a long time.

I "think" the 35 Newton resembles the 375 Ruger alot as well. Waiting to hear if that is something that could be used for case forming, should times get tough as well. I know there is no real sense in the cartridge, as a 358/375 Ruger would guarantee cases, but I also think 8x68S cases could be used as well. Not totally sure yet, still in the info collection operations.

I really dig the 30 and 35 Newtons. They say the original 264, 458, 338 and 300 were the original short mags, but I kinda think Newton was almost 40 years in front of them. Should they have been released today, I am thinking the Ruger case would not be a thought... Marketing I guess...

Mike, this rifle will be built for hard hunting. I would like a set of sights put on it, but it will for sure get a scope. Again, I am not building anything just yet and still haven't decided on anything as I do like the 358 Norma alot as well.

http://www.newtonrifles.com/Newton_Model_Types.swf

It would be interesting to find a Model 1916 in 35 Newton and/or a Model 1922 in .256 Newton. Those are two cartridges that would be interesting.

Well,,,,here's my thoughts if I were looking for something in that performance range.
First off, I would go with a wildcat on less costly but maybe more readily available brass.
Intial cost would be a bit higher however, with reamer charges, and custom dies.
Second, I would go with the 8x68S and leave full length, and simply neck up. This would need a longer action being 2.657 against 2.520 , but so what,,,imo.
I would have the reamers made for a .020" body taper, and a 30^ shoulder. This would increase volume, yet still have reliable feeding. I don't know what quite what the numbers would be, but thinking the 250 could be driven in the 3000+ fps range

Now one could do it with .375 Ruger brass, but with a .010" larger casehead,,,,how that would all work out exactly, I need to investigate alil deeper. But necking it down, isn't going to leave what I would want for a neck.
I would still go with a "magnum length action", keeping from deeper seating and reducing capacity.
Although a single feeder would be my choice, beit falling block or bolt.
As for doing the 35 Newton (or 68S) in an Encore, there is no way one can run the cartridge to it's potential. They barely are adequate for the standard belted casehead.

Point is, if I'm going custom build in such a round,,,,might as well do it my way. Couple hundred bucks more in a wildcat just ain't that big of deal. Yet on brass that is 30% cheaper.

The good thing is brass for the 35 Newton can be made with 8x68S cases. So that actually makes the Newton a little sweeter of a deal to be honest. I can get properly headstamped brass OR I can use the 8x68 brass for the operation. The 375 Ruger case is pretty close to the Newton as well, with just a little different shoulder angle.

I am wanting to do this in a Model 70 action, and I kinda wanna stick with the 3.4"-3.5" COAL, so I think I will have enough space for powder. I can probably swap out the mag box on the M70 for the 375 Length max box to gain me a little mag breathing room.

Again, I am still researching some. Trying to think about what barrel I would like on the rifle. I see Krieger makes a 1-10 and 1-12 for the 358's. I am thinking a #3 Contour or a #4 fluted for the rifle. Not super sure on either one of those yet though. I am thinking of finishing it at 25" though. Just to be the odd ball!

It is a long range build to be totally honest. It would be cool to have it for hunting next Fall (2013), but I wouldn't be broken hearted to not have it.

If any of you all have ideas for 35 cal barrels, I would like to hear them. I know certain barrels are better with certain calibers, but I have no favorites really, PacNor, Bartlein, Krieger, Brux, etc? Doesn't really make a difference to me. Just want a good one.

If you all have other ideas, send them. I am all about hearing your ideas..

Aside from being unbelted, what advantage does the .35 Newton have over the .358 Norma Mag? You can get cases for and Norma ammunition for the .358 Norma, even though it is not exactly commonly availible. Just a thought?

Yeah I see your point Scotty,,,,I had a brainfart on the forming 68S down. (also, I was sorta looking at more capacity)
But what you really need, is an Encore with a .35-74R Keith, to go with the other Encore's we have discussed :p

I have been really impressed with Pac-Nor Super Match Stnls. My Gunsmith says it's some of the best blanks he's worked with. And I do like the way they shoot.

I believe I'm with OT3. I can't see any advantage over the Norma, even in "cool factor." And I see a host of disadvantages in terms of hassle and cost when it comes to forming brass. I'm pretty sure Norma will always have 358Norma brass available. Not so sure about 35Newton. If I built one, I'd buy several hundred rounds of brass just to be on the safe side.

I have to add a qualifying statement to my comments, as I'm sure it colors them. I've always wanted a nicely matched pair of CRF actioned, AAA walnut stocked rifles in 308Norma and 358Norma. To continue Scotty's nomenclature, those two would end up being called Thor's Twins.

dubyam,
What a great name for a pair of great rifles. I think you should do it! Thor's Twins....... reminds of a story about an old girl friend.............. well, not here maybe at elk camp some day.

Yeah, I have looked at the Norma as well. It is in the running of sorts. The 35 Newton does beat it by 100-150FPS with 250's though. The real reason is I liked reading about the Newtons' back when I was a younger lad. Pretty sweet cartridges for the time they were invented. There are cases out there for it, price difference between the Norma and the Newton is a decent gap, but I wouldn't plan to be cycling through tons of them either. I imagine if I invested in a couple 100, I would have enough to last me a long time..

I kinda lump the Newton/Norma and even the Ruger based 358 in the same lot. Dies might be a touch cheaper for the Norma, but that is about where it stops. After that, it all kinda comes out in the wash. I wouldn't be trying to save any money with any of them. If that were the case, I would keep running my 338WM...

I do want it built on an M70 action though. Been looking a little at barrels and see many different ones that I like. Want a slightly faster twist in order to make sure it'll handle the heavyweights as well. It would be pretty fun to fling 200's really fast and then chug the big 310's out there as well..

Keep it coming. I am liking all this feedback. I am a nut when it comes to this. Might have to make a morale call to a few barrel makers and see what they say as well. Might even have to call some reamer manufacturers!

Scotty,
I'm going to swim up river on this one and say go with the Newton. It may be easier or a little cheaper to do it another way or use a different caliber but it won't be a "NEWTON". Just buy your brass up front and make sure a reamer is availible. The Model 70 is the right way to go for this caliber. I'm going to to do a 338Rum on a model 70 real soon and what I found was that it is cheaper to find an action already set up for the RUM than to take a standard action and modify it with a longer magazine etc.. I found a model 70 Black shadow in 300RUM and picked it up for $600 and all I need is to rebarrel. I don't know the exact dimensions of the Newton but I bet all you'd have to do is work on the feed ramps a bit. Plus you'd have the additional length to load out long. I think there is a lot of potential with rebirthing some of these older cartridges and using modern componets. Follow your dream! There is no satisfaction like it!
Just imagine that gun in your hands, you look down at the engraved caliber marking on the barrel and it says "35 NEWTON"

Scott

P.S. Got the Whelen today - she's got very nice wood for a Ruger.

I would do a .35-.375 Ruger. First of all the dies would be easy and the brass would be simple as well. For dies you could have a .375 Ruger die made into a bushing die for a FL. If you buy Hornady dies you can swap out the insert to a .35cal for the seater and be done. Hornady also makes generic neck dies in .35cal. The Ruger case is a standard magnum bolt face (.532) instead of the odd ball 8x68 (.512 not sure what the Newton is). The case capacity of the Ruger is closer to a 8mm Mag so performance would fall between the Newton/.358 Norma and the STA but closer to the STA. I would expect 2950-3000fps out of 250's and 3100-3150 out of 225's in a 26" barrel. I would skip the fluting unless you want it for looks. Small contours don't lose much weight with fluting. The thing is going to kick so I'd do a #5 contour with a brake. If you use a rather light stock it still should be under 9lbs scoped.

I know your a .35 fan but I'd probably just do a .375 Ruger and be done with it. No wildcat stuff to mess with and it will do everything the .35 will do just better. Shoot , 250 Sierra's, 250 TSX's, or 260AB's at around 3000fps and it will flat hammer elk. I've shot a couple elk past 500yds with my .375-.358STA and it puts the hurt on them.

I'd probably order a Krieger or Bartlein but if I could get a Brux considerably quicker you could do one of those too.

The down side to the Newton is resale if you ever sell it. People would rather buy a wildcat that has easily available brass and easy to form over a obsolete caliber that requires a ton of work to form.

I am actually old enough to know someone who used a .30 Newton for deer and elk hunting. Not very common now, the Newton cartridges, but they were something in their day.

I know that you guys really are enthusiasts of the .35 caliber rifle for hunting. I also know that Gun Nuts need to own some weird stuff to fulfill their particular passion for calibers and rifles. That is why we all have rifles that are not .30-30's or .30-06's exclusively.

Maybe I am dense and I am certainly getting old but I have been able to find all that I need for power and accuracy right here in Blight, Washington with the various .338 caliber rifles, on up through .340 Weatherby which I have own or have owned. Plus, I can usually buy cases at any outlet which carries a large selection of reloader stuff. I can even use .308 cases for the .338 Federal which I do mostly. This really fulfills my need for medium cartridges and also gives me a wide selection of cases and bullets to load, so why change? Just an opinion from the other side. I know, different strokes for different folks makes the shooting world go round!

Or you could do a .358-300 RUM and turn the big 35 into a freight train. I bet you could get real close to 3100 fps with a 250 gr PT.
Talk about an elk hammer...

Yeah, that would be a beast Jim, without a doubt. I have looked at the 358 UMT a little. Read a great article on it as well. Just not sure how easy it is to get a RUM M70 for the build. They are kinda rare..

Fotis, that rifle would be the first one I would buy should I ever run across enough loot! It is just about everything I want in a big 35 Cal!
