I do like em both though.

Reason enough. I have no need for both .222 Remington and .223 Remington, but I have them both and wish to part with neither rifle! I do have a way of rationalizing a need for both, though...I can let one cool off while the other works a prairie dog town.

What makes even more sense to me would be to add a 22-250 into the mix.

I have that slot covered with a Swift, JD---and old 77V that WILL shoot! All three .22s are good to go with 50-grain loads. I am trying now to get my .25-06 outfitted with a good load using the 85-grain Ballistic Tip or 75-grain V-Max. Then I will be absolutely ready for a little trip out to the prairie dog towns.

In keeping with the subject of this thread, however, I will restate that I am ready for any if the big stuff with my .35 Whelen. I have been to Arkansas the last three or four years and have yet to even see a bear...maybe I should just find a good hog hunt and thump a big five hundred pounder with it.

Here is another 5 shot group from the 338.. It is doing well. Going to log that load into the books I believe.

I think the Whelen is there as well. 2700 outta the 225's and this was shot from my rifle with my buddy steering it. I am not going to mess around too much more. He pulled the 1st, but laid the others in there.

Either of those groups will work for most anything you'd ever want to hunt.

Looks great to me, Scotty...but you've got me wondering how you manage to stuff 61 grains of Re15 into your cases! I just about have to do chin-ups on my press handle to get 59.5 grains under a bullet!

Really, cause I am just barely touching the powder charge at 61 grains seating the bullet to 3.430" The powder sits right at the junction of the neck and shoulder. Maybe you are seating them deeper than I am? Or my rifle has a larger chamber than yours and my cases are a blown out a little larger than yours. If I think of it, I will take pictures of the charge in the case. I am also dropping from a 4" drop tube, so maybe that helps as well?

My load for the Whelen is 60.4 gr. of RL15 and I use a 6" drop tube. There's plenty of room to seat the bullet without compressing the charge by very much.
Paul B.

Maybe I'll have to try a drop tube. My magazine length is limited to about 3.34" because the rifle is built on a 98 Mauser. I really don't think I need a heavier charge, but I do wonder if my bullets are slowly creeping out of the case necks.

The drop tube is the key buddy. Gets it all in there easily.

Like Paul, I have 0 signs of pressure, the load is consistent and my cases are lasting forever. Still on the same batch of 100 I bought in 2006. They don't stretch and the rifle seems to like.

I wonder if they are creeping. Never had that issue as the Whelen has ALOT of neck to hold the bullets.

Scotty,

The 338 Win Mag with the 250 gr AB is there.
You have yourself a long range thumper load for elk.

Hey Scotty that Reloader 15 seems to be the number for that 35 whelen of yours I am hoping that mine will perform like that when I get it. I am also real interested in those 200gr ABs as well once we can get them. My oldest is in Vegas for a holiday and he is trying to locate some Nosler brass in 35 whelen but it is real hard to locate
Hope you get drawn for all that you want this year.

Blessings my friend :)

Dan,

RL 15 is the powder for the 35 Whelen. I am loading 59.5 grs RL 15 with a 250 gr PT and getting 2574 fps from my M700 Classic which has a 22" barrel.

I ditto on the RL-15 in the Whelen first load I tried with the 225 AB gave me a 3 shot cloverleaf. Second 3 shot group was more of a bug hole and the next and so on. Have not even thought about changing anything. The best part is it was a rifle I had just bought for a sweet price. The guys on here told me RL-15 is the powder and lucky for me I have a good stock of the same lot number from from my days of shooting 308 in a few matches here and there. I have not even run the load over the Chroney yet and I am scared too. I might try going up in charge weight this year just to see what happens as my current load is really easy on brass. Everything shot with this combo this past season pretty much died in it tracks except for my mule buck who had love on his mind so he made about 20 yards.

You can try Wholesale Sports here in Alberta they show it on the website but I have not checked with them if it is in stock. It is pretty spendy!!!!!! I am using resized Winchester that is head stamped 30-06 that I bought over 10 years ago before QC got a wee bit sloppy these past few years. I tried to get the proper headstamped Remington but could not find any not to worry though as you can't get a 35 loaded 06 case into a 30-06. I would try the 225 AB's they made a believer out of me after the first on game shot.

Hi 338 Ultra, where abouts you are u living I checked @ Wholesale here in Regina & they advised me that it is back ordered at all their stores. I have placed a order with shop here back in August:( I drop in once a week but still not in. I have some 225 ABs & I am waiting for Mike's info before I stock up on RL15:)
Blessings my friend:)

Dan, I think RL15 and the 225's or 250's will really make you a believer Dan. I am really happy with mine. 225's at 2740 or so and the 250's at 2600.. Pretty solid combo. I think you will be really happy when you get yours sorted out..

Heck, now you gotta start planning for your 270WSM buddy! It is my dynamic duo.. The darned 338 is always fighting for attention though!

Here is a group I shot with the Whelen this afternoon. It is RL15, RP brass, CCI250, 225 AB. I really wanted to see what it would do today for a good group. The load has shot very well for me, turning in a great group at 600, so I am not surprised I flinched three times in order to make this one!

You just can't beat it! This load runs about 2730 over my chronograph. Please remember to work up to this load as it is above max.

It is nice when your flinch is consistent! Very nice shooting, Scotty.
