Well I had to sight in my 45/70 today and also took my favourite 22 lr for a ride as well. I started out @ 50yds with the 45/70 and open sights, was hitting 3" hight/left..used my brass punch to move the rear sight to the left, and adjusted the elevater for elevation..fired 3 more rounds and was about 1.5" hight and dead center with open sights (no bad since i'm not used to open sights) :shock, Put scope on and rough sighted @ 50, done, moved to 100yds and cranked off 2 shots, looked through my spotting scope and made a qwick adjustment, had 4 more rounds left, and let them fly as well, good enough for now for a new rifle I quess, man they are just a hoot to shoot!...Here's some pics @100yds with the 45/70 and about 50 ish rounds with my 22, managed to even shoot a round of skeet too 8) ..I won't tell you how I did though

Lou,

That is some mighty fine shooting, way to go.
I sure like the looks of your 1895 Guide gun. What scope do you have on it and what factory load were you shooting?

Hi Jim, Bushnell trophy xlt, 1.75-4x32 circle x heavy plex reticle (for now, I already had it) have the same one on my 12 gauge, and works really well for me, i've shot 2 deer with this scope, and it works just great, wide f.o.v and crystal clear..I have some handloads being made up for me, but shot the 300gr federal's with the speer bullet today. I well be getting a leupold vx-2 or vx-3 for the 45/70 very soon though, yah I'm kinda getting alittle Lou-Py eh....

Nice set up Lou and man, that rifle likes those Federals for sure! Great shooting.

Nice shooting Lou! I had mine out last week as well and thoroughly enjoyed shooting it with 350 grain cast bullets. I waited to shoot that monter until I was done with all the load work I was doing with the benchrest rifle though :) ...little difference in the trigger pull and recoil!!

That is some great shooting with the 45-70! That is one fine looking lever gun as well.

You need to hold a few of them Jake. Pretty tough to put down...

+1

Thanks fellas  ..yah Scotty, these 45-70's are just so darn fun to shoot, the accuracy is very close to a fine bolt action rifle @100yds and under..I'm gonna try the 350gr hornady FP and see how they do.. ..I'm very confident in this rifle, with good loads shooting 200yds max on large game. For long range, my 270wsm gets the naud...Lou

Nice shooting, your 45-70 apparently really likes those 300 gr bullets. Thanks for sharing. !

I really like my Guide Gun. I have one of the 1st one's that have a ported barrel. It came out prior to the stainless models so I had it hard chromed. It has a Leupold Scout scope on it. Very accurate little rifle. I use 250gr Barne's TSX over 57.5gr AA-1680 which gets me 2570 FPS out of that short little barrel. Quite the light show when its dark out!

Man, I can imagine it has a little muzzle flash to it! That little 250 is pumping! Not too much behind a 338 with a 250! The Guide Rifles are pretty addicting, that is for sure!
