My Marlin 1895 Guide gun in 45-70 now has a Leupold VX-3 1.75-6x32mm mounted in Lleupold Standard Base (front dove tail and rear windage screws) and low rings. I had to add 2 shims to get the proper elevation.

The load consists of the Nosler 300 gr BST with 59.0 grs H322, W-W case and W-W LRP promers.

It took 4 shots to get a rough zero at 50 yds and then I moved to 100 yds. My first shot was high so I made and adjustment and put the next 3 shots into .400". I made one more adjustment to get where I wanted to be. My first shot was me and went slightly to the right.

I than went to the 300 yard range and sent a few down range using Kentucky windage. The bottom 3 shots went 3.175". I compensated and shot 4 went high, hitting the top of the paper target nearly 5" above the bullseye. I compensated for this hit and shotd 5 and 6 were high and off to the left but landed 1.730" from each other. I shot round 7 and had the right elevation but 2" to the right.

Not too bad for guessing the drop (about 40 inches) and hitting the paper. I would have hit a buffalo in the vitals with all my shots.

I love this scope!

Nice, that is awesome Jim. I cannot wait to get back and try that out. I think my SABR has a mark for 300 yards, so I am going to test it out and let you know how it goes!!! That is some good shooting. Should be deadly up to 200 yards huh? Scotty

Well, that load will work for about anything you could want to hunt in North America. I'd say you're about ready for Canada, Jim!

Good job Jim. Them Marlins man!!!!!!!!!

A 300 yard guide gun. Pretty cool and real good shooting. Looks like your loaded for bear.
Good Hunting
Greg

I have owned a few Marlins since the first Model 336 one in 1965. However, I can not believe how consistantly the .45-70, 1895 rifles seem to group from esentially the same Marli 36 action that all of my other older Marlin's had.

Nice groups and canny shooting at 300 yards.

Here is the M1895 Guide 45-70 with a Leupold VX-3 1.75-6x32mm scope in Leupold Standard base and rings.

I can't wait to hunt with the 45-70 this year! It should be a good time I think. 257 Ackley also gave me some 358 Win 200gr SILVERTIPS. I am thinking of zeroing them and seeing how they do. Between those two old classics, I can't see anything walking too far away from me! Scotty

Looks like you have her ready to go Jim. Now i gotta get one!

Bryan! They are a blast. You have to give one a try. They are scary accurate for a lever gun and they are a blast. Once I get home, I will let you run some rounds through mine! I bet you will have one directly after that! Scotty

Thanks fellas. A BIG THANK YOU to Guy Miner who pointed me towards the Leupold Standard Mount and Rings with shims. This mounting system is rock solid on the Marlin. Guy, Thank you Sir!
I now have a precision long range brick lobber.

ROGER THAT! I will never turn down shooting someone else rifle and ammo

Brian,

Be forwarned, Marlinitis is non curable. The only way to ease the symptoms is to buy, buy, buy! the 45-70 is addictive!

FWIW, I shot a 5 shot group with my 338 RUM at 300 yds that went 2" but I was excited lobing those 45-70 bullets at that distance!

You have been officially forwarned!
