7mm Mauser 160 PT and RL19

"I think I would like to have a 280 Featherweight, like my boys 7mm. Be a good packing rifle."

Me too! I do have the FWT in a push feed 7x57 though. It has a 2x7 Leupold on it and I absolutely love that rifle. Currently I'm working with the 120 and 140 gr. Barnes TSX bullets. It seems to like the 120's but the 140's not so much. :( My .280 Rem thought seems to like the 140's so no big loss if the M70 doesn't like them.

Not quite the same load but I loaded 160 grain Accubonds in my Ruger #1 in 7x57 to 2750 fps. They worked great in Africa and there wouldn't be much you couldn't take with your load.

Karamojo Bell killed 5000 elephants (or how many ever it was) with a .275 Rigby (7mm Mauser) and 175 grain FMJ bullets.

Lefty, I kinda thought about you when making this load up. Couldn't remember what you used though. I remember thinking it was a good one...

I ended up using IMR 4350 for my load. It's a little over book but I see no pressure signs and holds good accuracy.

Nice shooting fellow. That's real fine for a 7mmMauser. I'm shooting a 7Mauser out of an old war rifle and I like shooting Nosler 140BT'S and 140 CT Silvertips out of mine. I use it to hunt southern whitetails along with my 7mmRem.Mag. Have used a few 160 PT'S in my 7 Mag and they do well. Have a good day.

Gotcha, thank's Lefty.

Seem's like the load is shooting pretty decently, I did load up some test loads with varying seating depths to see if anything about the current load sticks out. Hoping to see a node where it shoots well, everytime.

Once thing I have noticed is the 7mm Mauser seems to stretch more than other cartridges I have messed with. I am bumping the shoulder each time I reload it, but I think I was bumping more than I should have been. I was around .004-.005 and I have backed the die off to .0015-.002..

I figure after I get a decent load worked out for this one, I will get a new batch of 100 or so, and I should have enough on hand for quite awhile.

I do gotta say, I love that little 7mm. Really is becoming a favorite. Hoping my son has a chance to use it a little more this Fall. I am going to try and submit him for a Oregon Youth Hunt. Be sweet to see him shoot a cow elk with it.

Scotty,
What do you think your load would do out of a 18.5" barrel? Just thinking about my Ruger 77 RSI.
You could always AI your chamber - ought to eliminate any case stretch.

It is perfect just like it is!

I agree Charlie. I really like it as is. Thinking by tightening up my sizing tolerance a little, should help it out some.

So, it looks to me like about 100FPS or so.

I would try it for sure, or like Jim said, drop back to a 150 PT in order to get the speed back up, but then again, for a 160 PT, I can't see 2650 being something any elk, moose or deer would shrug off at anything less than 300 yards.

That RSI is a beauty too. I think I remember seeing pictures of it..

Thanks Scotty!
It looks like it doesn't give up much at all. The RSI is a brush and out to 250yds type gun anyways. It handles almost like a sxs shotgun. It makes an excellent blacktail gun.

Man, heck yeah, no slouch at all Scott. That would be a serious rifle. I see Lee has a bunch of 150 PT's for sale as well. Might need to take a look at them as well.. Can't never have enough PT's on hand!

That is 30-06/180 gr ballistics right there! You're done unless you want an LRAB load.....

Not sure why I passed over this thread.
All I could add, is to say it's a grand old round, that don't seem to get much fan fare here in the US.
But I totally agree with Fotis here. I bet you do play with the ABLR Scotty, soon as they come available. I know I will be :!:

Oh, you know it Dave. Really why I am playing with the 160 PT's some. Wanna see what I can do with that 150 ABLR.
