That was a great article Gerry. Might have to give RL25 a try with the heavier 175's. That would be a smashing elk load for sure.

I do like reading John Barsness's articles, you ever try Magnum in anything Scotty? My 264 WM didn't really like it but others have had good sucess with it. The RL 25 175 gr load just shy of 3000 fps is definitely a good one, it would be equally as good for moose and grizzly too.

Never tried Magnum, but I do believe I will be trying RL25 when I get home with the 175 PT's though! The only factory load that I ever shot out of my old 7mm was the Winchester 175 PP's. They shoot under an inch with ease! I gotta think I could make the 175's do as well and close to 3000, well, that would be a hammer.

Mike did send me data with Retumbo and 175 Hornady's, I was in the mid 2900's really easily in my 7WSM as well. Both are about the same case cap, so either would be cool with me.

Interestingly enough, Magnum presents some problems in many cartridges in which I have tried it. Accuracy is lacking. I can only think of one or two instances where it has given me decent accuracy.

I can think of only one cartridge I've run Magnum in that it wasn't near the top of the list in both accuracy and velocity. Funny how mileage varies.... though I believe Magnum is one of those powders that is more consistent as pressure increases. I many cases, this consistency is precluded by the advice of lawyers or the tolerances of individual handloaders. I have no problem letting the brass decide what the limit is.... my current load with Magnum is a good example.

.243 Win
105 Amax seated to tickle the lands
50.5gr of Ramshot Magnum
WLRM primer
3100 fps and a sub-MOA load to 600... which is as far as I've shot it.

Incidentally.... the QL load info you gave me was spot on.... with a max of 50.2 and velocity of 3089.

The only primer I ever shoot with Ramshot Magnum is the WLRM.... I've had of instances where lesser primers have led to lesser results.

Interesting, Songdog. Interesting. Most of the cartridges in which I've tried this particular powder are highly overbored, so that may be one factor in my experience.

SD, is that your typical load for the AMax's? I was thinking about trying some of them in my son's 243. Brian uses Retumbo in his AI, but I am not sure I could get enough out of it to make it perform. Wonder if RL22 or 25 would work?

I take all factory ammo numbers with a large grain of salt. In two rifles that I have checked, I am very close to publishesd velocity numbers, However, I also have standard deviation in the range of 90 to 115fps.

I haven't tried RE22.... but I bet it'd work well. I did shoot some IMR 7828 (between RE22 and RE25), 46.5 grains got me 3100+.... and accuracy was good. But, I only have about half a pound of that.... and 2+ pounds of Magnum, so I'm shooting the Magnum load. RE17 also shoots well... and I have a bunch of the 105 HPBTs loaded up with 41 grains RE17 and a WLR primer, they run a little over 3k.
