Do you guys carry one while big game hunting or camping?
If so what is your choice? What loads do you carry? Let's hear it.

I'v only got two handguns a ruger MKII .22 and a ruger black hawk in 45 Colt and its what I carry when I'm fishing in the back country or where thier might be something that might want to eat me when I,m hunting small game and all I have is a rimfire rifle on hand and load 300 gr Hornadys with some H 110. Because Cougers are really thick in NE Oregon.

Pop,
I carry my Kimber .45 in the bank, the store, camping,, hunting, and every where else because you never know what might jump out from behind a bush and try to attack you.
It's my second amendment right and I exercise it.
The load is federal 230gr. hydroshock.
Bring it on!!!
Most guys like a pair of "----" but I like a pair of Kimbers

I don't carry while hunting much but I do backpacking or camping. When I do its an "OLD" Vaquero case color 4 5/8" 45 colt.I load it with Buffalo Bore 325gr. lbt-lfn at 1300fps.

Its funny I like my rifle bullets light and fast but love BIG HEAVY handgun rounds :p

POP

I never have delt with handguns much. Had a Ruger in .40cal for a brief time and did some trading.
When I was getting ready to go to Alaska on our bowhunting trip we were only allowed 70lbs of gear and we had no intentions of taking a firearm. Couldn't afford the added weight...... two days before we left, my wife finally broke and " TOLD " me I was going to go buy another handgun to take to AK. Went as cheap as I could at the time... Taurus .44Mag
It does make it on quite a few trips now !

When I'm hunting, the rifle has always been enough.

When I'm backpacking, hiking or Nordic-skiing the backcountry, I do pack something small and vicious. It just might make the difference someday.

I wanna get something but I want it light and inexpensive (imagine that!)

I subscribe to the Clint Smith teaching that a handgun is something you use to fight your way to your rifle.

For urban use I use M1911 in .45 acp.

For the woods I am liking the Glock M20 in 10 mm Mag that a bear country friend uses. In bear country you can keep this gun on you. It is easy to forget that in many places today a rifle shot is a dinner bell for local grizzlies.

I don't usually carry a handgun when afield with a shotgun or rifle. However, most other times I do. The Kimbers look real nice but the heavier/bulkier a handgun gets, the less I like to carry them. I frequently carry a Kahr 9mm which weighs a 1 lb when unloaded. Its easy to conceal and has proven itself in defensive combat by NYC off-duty PO's.

POP,

Are you looking in the revolver direction or semi-auto? That was my issue I wanted " cheap ", but that didn't seem to go along with " light " ya, I know like you said... ( imagine that )
Seem like a lot of the .357's were obviously a lot lighter than jumping into the 44's....again, not much experience with either.

POP,

I'm not sure if you ever make it towards the Pawnee Grass Lands, but your more than welcome to pull the trigger on mine anytime.

while hunting I usually carry a rugar blackhawk in 45 long colt, 4 5/8 " barrel. I have 3 shot shells load w/ #12 shot during upland bird season and during deer season until it get cold. the other 3 holes have 280 grn swc keith bullets pushed by 11.5 grns of hs6. This is what I carry the 45 iif hiking into rainy falls for salmon. other wise I might carry a sig 229-40s/w. if its middle of winter I carry an old H&R 9 shot 22, to take shots at foxes cats, etc etc

My "woods gun" that I carry while hunting and out and about is a S&W 65-3 4" in .357mag. I bought her via Gunbroker earlier this year for $250.

She shoots great and carries well. Will shoot dead on with 125 grain JSP at 25 yards.

However I am really wanting one of the new Ruger Redhawk 4" in .45colt for a woods gun. They also make it in .44mag.
