Bad day at the range

Well, I bought a chronograph and today was my first time ever using one. It was fairly cool, it was an inexpensive F1 Chrony.

If I could offer my lessons learned...

***Never combine shooting over a chrono with resetting your scope after you had it off your gun.
I used to think "who could ever shoot their own chronograph?"

Otherwise (after the buzz kill) shooting was OK. Its been a few months since I've been to the range.

My grandson's second shot over my beta master he creased it & broke the wires.
I am wondering how fur friendly is that 60.0gr. v-max?

Blessings,
Dan

A friend killed one of my CED sensors with his muzzleloader. A perfect 45 cal hole in the center of the front one and how it didn't hit the rear one?

Been there done that. Matter of fact, I sent my 35P back to Oehler this week. Too many nicks and close calls I guess, unit just gave up.

I've had two Beta Chronys shot and my Oehler 35P has a perfect .366 groove in two of the screens. If you ain't shooting chronographs, you ain't shooting. Otherwise, it was a productive day--any day that yields information on our loads is productive.

"If you ain't shooting chronographs, you ain't shooting."

Ain't that the truth.    I won't admit to how many though. OK, one was deliberately shot.made me a happy shooter. Showed my first .270 doing 2999 FPS with the 150 r. Nosler Partition  when even manual in town showed 2800 FPS, give or take. It as the top load using the old milsurp 4831. I later found out it read every load high. A 180 gr. Sierra through the guts of that thing cured it of those shenanigans. 8) The others were unintentional. :(

I'm always very careful about setting up the chronograph. I'll always put up my targets and set the rest up with a rifle on it aligned on the target, and then set up my tripod and chronograph and eyeball the thing into place. One day I did not put the rifle rest just exactly where I would normally put, and when I sat down to shoot I adjusted its position laterally without giving thought to the chronograph. I was rewarded with a bent diffuser rod. They're cheap. I got lucky that time. I have yet to shoot the main instrument, but I know it's just a matter of time. I'm trying to put it off as long as possible though.

One thing I do, after shooting a couple of Chronys, is to bore sight the rifle before shooting over the chronograph. It saves a lot of aggravation.

I did the same thing a long time ago.
A T/C Contender handgun and new scope installed, I thought it can't be that far off lets just set up and shoot.
BAM...perfect center shot...lol

seems like I've shot everything I own through my chrony . one day I was shooting my muzzleloader through it . after a couple shots I remember sitting there thinking " that fly must like muzzle blast , because it sure ain't movin ". I never , never , never , ever , thought of the sabot coming off this quickly . it still works ,it just has a knowledge bump .

then I made a little shield out of plexiglass . I'm sure it won't stop a speeding bullet . LOL

Jim,

I use a plexiglass shield ever since a piece of walnut media inside the case, or a clump of unburned powder, pierced the electronics. Actually, that has happened a couple of times. The problem was solved by including the plexiglass, formed to drop over the front portion of the Chrony.

You missed the LCD display. Was it a pass through or did you recover the bullet?

Sorry you killed your chronograph.
Good shooting buddy.

Dr Mike , I guess we live and learn .

It only takes once or twice sending a Chrony back to the manufacturer for repairs and receiving the phone call informing you that it is unrepairable before you smarten up and discover a way to avoid that much of a problem. :)

Don't feel bad your not alone. I shot mine with the 35 Whelen 225 AB. Needless to say it was DRT.

Bought a new one and shot that one earlier this year with the 30-06, but just clipped it. Thankfully it still functions well.

When setting up remove the bolt and look down through the barrel. You should have it 3/4 of the way up from the base and center through the screens. You will be ready to safely shoot your target.

Might as well shoot mine.
I bought an F1, used.
Set it up the other day for the first time while my buddy was shooting
his 7STW. I've got his rifle shooting 160 Partitions at 4988 FPS :)

Yes, Howard, I'd say that might qualify as a tad warm. Make certain the case is fully extended. Even a slight crimp stopping the chronograph from deploying fully will jack up velocities to astronomical values.
