Ballistic Tips on Elk

Your right Pop, I guess you are correct on that. I just wouldn't have imagined the 180gr BT would have acted quite like that, they actually look pretty stout in the sectioned bullets I have seen. I have a buddy that shoots them out of a 300WBY and mainly hunts elk/deer with them. Cannot get him to change. They would worry me a little at the 300 Mag speeds though. I figure the AB is probably the best compromise going for someone who wants a High BC'ed bullet that will hang together at high speeds. Velvetants pictures showed that I think. I had pretty good luck with the 140gr AB in my 270WSM on elk. Still, when I think elk, I think the worst possible case and plan for the best, so heavy and Partition are usually what I would like! Here is my son with his bull. Note the shoulder!

I agree. I learned the hard way too about normally constructed bullets. Also on elk with a 300 WBY and Hornady interlocks on shoulder shots. Same result. They may work good out of the ought-six but with the higher velocity loads, especially at close range, they aren't bone crunchers. Congrats on a fine elk. YUM

Cup and core bullets, no matter who makes them, are not rated for higher velocities. They simply cannot perform to the same standard as a Partition or a bonded core bullet. Congratulations on your son managing to take his elk despite the setback on the initial shot. That is the mark of a hunter.

Nice picture nice bull, that is the best eating elk available to us as hunters. Even beats a 12 or 13 year old cow (I know for a fact). Good recovery on the shot and it reinforces one of Bills rules "keep shootin until they stop moving" thanks for sharing with us!!!!!
