Bass Pro just bought Sportsman's Warehouse

Juneau has a Sportmans. I never can understand why. There are more employees in there than customers at just about any given time. The selection of reloading components is pretty good, but there was a local old timer with a store there for years with a better selection. He was a crooked old bugger and his prices were on the high side but he had a lot of stuff. Sportmans played a hand in taking him out but mostly he did it to himself.

It’s coming up on the end of a very expensive 3 year lease. I suspect they will pull out. I’ve taken Johnny Morris fishing, he’s just a good ol boy. But I don’t think his bean counters are.

SW was the only big box store I'd enter for reloading supplies, etc. Not hopeful given this news.

Just another form of censorship? Buy up all the competition and shut off the valve of supply?
Sounds like ALOT like facebook........ or Germany
In late 30's doesn't it.

I don’t know. A lot of people just call it good old American capitalism.

I know this is an old post, but I seems that in December 2021 they called off the merger because the FTC wouldn't have approved it!

I was happy when I was told this at our local Sportsman's Warehouse. The buy out of Cabela's turn out local Cabela's into a clothing store that sells some hunting, camping products.

I haven't made it to our Sportsman Warehouse since they bought out the Fid and Stream. It is 40 miles away and Bass Pro and Cabelas are closer. I did notice from looking at their website that they did carry some better quality merchandise.. Bass Pro never really amazed me. Cabelas was great when the Hamburg, PA store first opened but since the take over kind of sucks. The real same is that the local gun shop/ outdoor shop is clearing out its boot and clothing because it can't keep up with Bass Pro/Cabelas pricing. Around here many guys purchase based on price and not quality. Their gun business is doing well but I have noticed that they reduced the number of styles of guns they stock. Their Savage line consists of the Axis and Precision rifle and the rimfire lines. No more model 10/110. Ruger is the same way.

Our local Sportsman's was pretty good. I recently read some positive Auction Com reviews that highlighted smart use of retail space, which made me think Cabela and Bass Pro are a long way away down in Anchorage along with two SWs, but that’s still a lot of prime real estate dedicated to sporting goods, which is great to see.

Bass Pro bought Cabela's for their bank so they can make money financing their customer's junk. Sear's tried that, and is dying a slow death.

The bad part is, SW barges up a lot of reloading stuff in quantity. I can't ship powder and primers up here in small quantity and rely on a bigger store to have a good selection...SW is the only big store in Fairbanks.
Yes, it's a common issue. After Bass Pro took over Cabela's, reloading supplies dropped off, and now Sportsman's seems to be following suit. With local shops closing or cutting stock, it's getting harder to find what you need.

For me Cabela's is now simply waste of time. The usual Chinese junk.

When I was younger the cool places were Eddie Bauer's and Abercrombie in SF... but I didn't have much money to spend. Now that I have the money and desire what's available? Cabela's? Big Box merchandising and quality gear do not go together. Shop at your local Gun/Outdoor dealer and help keep him in business.
