Brown Bear bullets for the 35 Whelen?

I haven't owned a 35 Whelen but I do own a 358STA and have shot 5 elk and a moose with it using 250gr Hornady's at around 3050fps (I also own a 350 Rem. mag and have shot a deer with it using 200gr Corelok factory ammo). I built a couple 358STA's for buddies that shot 225 Sierras and 225 NBT's in them at 3150-3175fps with great success on Alaska moose and African plains game. I also have it's big brother, a 375-358STA, and have kill 6 elk plus numerous deer with it using 270 Fail Safes and 250 Sierras. It's hard to not like a big bore for thumping big critters. They flat kill stuff.

35 Whelen, I concur with nearly everything you have said on this topic, except the comparison of the .35 Whelan to the .338-06. The only point that I disagree with there is the reference to the "Whelen being 100 fps faster than the .338-06 at a bullet weight". That is not actually true, apples to apples, If you remember there is 0.020 inch difference in diameter between the two calibers and I personally would prefer to use bullets of the same sectional density when comparing caliber ballistics, whenever possible, instead of bullet weight because they are more equally compared.

The .35 Whelen 250 gr Partition has a SD of .279. This is nearly identical to the .338 caliber (.338-06, 225 gr Partition SD of .281. If you were to compare these two bullets of the same sectional density, it would make more sense to me as an apples-to-apples comparison and velocities all of the sudden are pretty equivalent. Comparing different calibers and different ballistic coefficients is a slippery slope.

The CD is far more important to smaller calibers than it is to larger cals as long as enough bullet is used. Just compare a few .458 bullets CD to that of the 250 gr .338. I do not have a manual in front of me but a tuff 350gr 458 will impress any bear yet its CD is much less. If both the 35whelen and the 338-06 are loaded to the same pressure with the same weight bullet the 35 will have a higher velocity. The relationship between the 35 whelen and the 338-06 is the same as the one between the 30-06 and the 270win if loaded to the same pressures.

Tjen,
That sounds right, and dont forget those figures are someone else comparing the two I was just the messenger, and reposted it
On here for all too view. I am just an old broken down bush pilot, that likes 35 Whelens! And thinks Nosler charges to much for their BTs, and dislikes Hillary Clinton!

35 Whelen, Scotty, Dr Mike and all you other 35 Whelen fans--is the 348 Win close enough to 35, to allow me in this group ? LOL

If you look at my last post under politics you will see I agree with you about Bill and Hill, but in all fairness I don't have a dog in that fight

And last but not least if you think Nosler charges to much for their BT's, try buying some Northfork--in Canada LOL

I like the Whelen, but I don't use it exclusively. However, there is the concern that the 348 Win doesn't quite meet the criterion to join the group. Perhaps we can call a meeting at a convenient location to discuss a slight adjustment to the rules. I suggest that we meet and discuss this matter over a feast (say caribou steaks (yes, I do like tenderloin) with appropriate sides in some delightful location such as, oh, the Yukon Territory) prepared by the supplicant seeking admission to the cadre.

Consequently, you are correct about the cost of Northfork bullets, and I'll just include virtually any Swift bullets that find their way into the Dominion of Canada.

I think you should be accepted with open arms! Nothing cooler than a chick with
Lever action! Unless she arrives at Mikes party flying a Super Cub, I can bring the Maine Looobstahs..............!
No Northfolks for this Cowboy

+1 maybe we can get her into a 35 Whelen maybe a Browning lever action. Make em hard shell and I'll see if I can make it.

If Cheyenne would just turn that dirty old 30-06 she has into a 35 Whelen she could give all of that other stuff away... Dang lady has so many rifles her poor uncle probably has tired arms loading all that darned ammunition for her...

Hmmm why get rid of a perfectly good 30-06 when she can have a new rifle?

Why not the super cub, especially if she picks you and Scotty up on her way to the party lol

We are stuck with Norma and they can also be expensive. But remember Cheyenne does not pay for her bullets, her grandfather buys them and loads them for her, therefore when she says she has no problem using premium bullets---- well dah ! lol

Dr Mike, please don't encourage her, she is already a pain in the posterior lol.

Dr Mike, I understand that I might get to meet you this summer, as I too was invited to tag along, looking forward to it.

Truck Driver, her 30-06 is older than I am and I remember FDR when he was president of the colonies lol

All the more reason to keep it a 30-06. the old pre war models are hard to come by at a decent price any more.

Well, any encouragement is accidental. I do my best not to encourage anyone. Hey, even if we're not able to meet up, April, the coffee is always on at our place; and you will find a warm welcome from my good lady and myself.

Just trying to clean those rascals up as much as I can...

They are like the coyote of the wildlife world, let em hang around too long and they'll overpopulate and just cause a ruckus. Never seen that sorta behavior out of a good 35 Whelen... :)

Now, Scotty, there's no need of making those benighted souls who stagger through life encumbered with an '06 feel badly about not owning a Whelen. Ain't no call to make people feel bad by asking them if they have a Whelen. If they have one, they'll tell you soon enough.

Yeah and besides I own a 30-06 a 35 Whelen and a 35Whelen AI and to mess up a pre-war M70 in 30-06 would be sacrilege, the idea of such a thing.

True enough... Just would hate seeing good folks go without. It's like never eating a good steak and just grinding it all into hamburger...

Hmm maybe some people can't chew steak and have to gum it so they grind it into burger so they can at least get to taste good meat.
See what you did? Look how far off the subject we've gotten.
Just for that you need a good 30-06! Now go buy one.

I go out to work the dogs and come back to find I have been throw under the bus--well not by everyone, thank you whelen 35, Truck Driver, Dr Mike

Yes, the 30-06 has given birth to a lot of successful children, the 25-06, 270, 338-06, and 35 Whelen to name a few, and she is proud of her offspring. A good mother will produce and raise good children and she is glad you all respect and enjoy her children so much, all the while knowing there is never nothing like the original.

Scotty, just joking with you

Now, go gentle on us, Cheyenne. See what happens when you leave for a short while. Just got off the phone with Gil, and he wondered if everyone knew how hard it is on him to ensure that I get home safely each time we go out. That boy...

Hat"s off to Gil. We do the same thing with our grandfather. I think it irritates him a bit, but he knows we love him.

Some men have earned and deserve the kind of respect Gil is giving you Dr Mike and I agree with him.

Take care guys
