Brown Bear bullets for the 35 Whelen?

I use a partial resize on all of my hunting ammo. I don't understand how one can have a FTF with headspacing on a belted case? Plus I have a 9.3x74R but it headspaces on the rim. In fact I have never had a FTF on any case or caliber that I have handloaded. If you only set the case shoulder datum back .001/.002 it is impossible to have a FTF unless you set your primers too deep in the case and I set mine with a hand tool to be about .005 deep in the pocket with no anvil movement after seating.

The headspace on that Ruger 77 338 was almost out of spec. Remington factory 250 ( then it was the GS bullet, early 90's) would fire but every primer had a faint firing pin strike. The FTF primers had barely a mark on the primer. Some WW and Federal were worse. Seems the belt is slightly different on different makes of cases, in this case, with the headspace set on the outer limits, it was enough ( probably in conjunction with short firing pin/weak spring, or primer pockets too deep maybe?) I got FTFs.

I too partial resize, i.e. on all cases I set the dies to only set the shoulders back a minute amount. Of course, this was done to the fired cases from that 404 and the two 9.3x62s, but with factory ammo, I was stuck.

My hunting load for my Whelen uses a 250 Swift A Frame, I would think that would do fine for most anything in NA, especially at short range.

My SIL uses a Mauser 98 I had made up for him, also in 35 Whelen AI ( my smith used the same reamer he used on Mod 700) and he likes the Nosler 225 AB on elk. He has taken two and been in on taking down a wounded one his buddy shot with ( dare I say...a .270! lol) Anyhow, he took a nice 5 ptr this year but used a Tikka 3 Lite in 7 rem mag and the 168 Berger. Right at 300yds, one shot he dropped, got back up, popped him again, both bullets exited. He said he liked "the way the Whelen put them down better", ha. Its a good cartridge....(especially Improved :) )

It would certainly deliver a "thump," Bill.

Our favorite factory load for the 375 H&H was the Winchester 270 Failsafe ( back in 2002) It was accurate, fast and we never recovered a bullet. 3 Zebra, a Black Widebeast, a waterbuck, a hartebeest, a blesbuck, an impala and a warthog. It was a good bullet. I don't know why they discontinued it. After reading about Hal Waugh (sp?) bear guide in Alaska and Big Nan ( a .375 H&H reamed out to the .375 Weatherby) I had to have one. I had a Mod 700 BDL SS with a 24" bbl. My smith reamed it out to .375 Weatherby and I loaded the 270X at incredible speed/accuracy. I never killed anything with it. I had Harris Gunworks in AZ put one of their synthetic drop magazine Safari stocks on it. I traded it and its 2.5x8 Leupold scope to an outfitter friend of mine for an Aoudad hunt in West Texas. He used it for clients to shoot eland on an exotic ranch in East Texas. I myself used a 338 RUM and a 180 AccuBond on the aoudad at 250yds. All this to say the old 375 H&H or Ackley or Weatherby with 270X would be awesome on big bear/moose.

It is rather fascinating to witness the resurrection of a dead thread. New perspectives make for great reading. Wonder what other threads should be revived?

I think the same thing from time to time Mike. We've had some good ones in the past. Our newer members would probably like them.

+1 Scotty. There is a significant knowledge base in the past posts. We need to encourage people looking for answers to do even a cursory search. It would be interesting to see some of the refinement on loads and to hunting techniques as result of past threads.

Heck, I'm always searching for "stuff". Some of the old threads have taught me something new or shown me something I should have never lived without...

This knowledge is out there, you just have to find it or pump the right sources of this knowledge?

It is an interesting thread...although I will probably never own a 35 Whelen or shoot a brown bear, I read the whole thread nonetheless...

BG,

Anyone can own a Whelen. In fact, hanging around here, it is a distinct possibility! It is an interesting thread, to be sure.

BG, A 35 Whelen would sure knock those Kentucky White tail down and you could be like Daniel Boone and kill a Bear if you wanted to.

I do enjoy the old 35 Whelen.. Pretty fun and you can load it from mild to wild.

Got some of these loaded up on Sunday..

Might get them out this weekend..

I have a Browning A-Bolt 25-06, a Cooper 257, a Sako 6.5 Swede and a Weatherby 270 that will knock the socks off any whitetail, so I am good there...

In all actually there is one scenario where I would possibly own a 35 Whelen...my son who is currently in Louisana with the Coast Guard spent his last tour in Ketchikan, AK where he took a really nice black bear...all he talks about is, hopefully, going back to Alaska his next tour and, if so, maybe getting a brown...if he does get assigned there I can see me going for a visit with a 35 Whelen or a 338 and forgetting to bring it back...if this does come to pass I can see the makings for a good thread...

Cheers/bg
