Cartridges That Didn't Take

I would disagree that some did not 'take'. Quite a few listed were big in their day, just a fallen by the wayside. .222, .22 Swift, .250-3000, .257 Roberts, .300 and .303 Savage, .44-40...

If someone suggests .300 H&H, you may get a visit from a very large, very unhappy man...

:)

Give it time- half of today's favorites will make that list in 10 years. Took a while for some body to think of the 30-40 Krag and at one point that was good enough for uncle Sam. 25-35, 38-44, .30 carbine. Also what goes around..... who needs a 28 Ga?.... but they are making them again. Half the fun is something unique. Lets see Dad had 6.5 Jap....thats pointless...gasp  but its a 6.5... Depends where you are and why you shoot too. CL

Where do I go to file a 'hurt feelings' report. Several of those have a great following! Not everything can be a 30-06 or a 308.

257 Roberts? 220 Swift?? 338-06??? 35 Whelen????

IMHO there should be two lists. Any of the cartridges which were issued by 1958 and those issued after 1958. The reason that I am suggesting this is that many cartridges like the 8mm Mauser were made in the 10's of million rifles after 1898, just not after 1945. Then there are some modern cartridges that never sold very many rifles period! Even during their short existence, like the 25 WSSM. Plus, cartridges like the .44 WCF (.44/40) which were in production and popular for more than 70 years before WWII should not be included. You may call them obsolete but not unpopular. I also happen to get bored always shooting the same thing as everyone else all of the time.

There are a lot of critters around here that will be glad to hear the 222 Rem isn't gonna last.
Guess I'll have to dispose of mine and find something more popular. (NOT!)

Some of these rounds... .22 Sav High Power, 8mm mauser for example are still quite popular in Europe. When you said rounds that didn't take, I thought you'd list rounds that were never chambered in many rifles. Military examples would be 6mm Lee Navy, .280 Ross, and an argument could be made for the .30-40 as it saw such a short service life. The .303 brit and 8mm mauser definitely did take.

In commercial examples, the .44-40 has probably taken more game in North America than all other calibers combined.

When I think of failed offerings, I'm thinking .356 Win, .223 Rem Mag, 7-30 Waters, .375 win, 6.5 Rem Mag, etc.

OK.
I'll play.
17 Mach 2
224 Weatherby
256 Win Mag
348 Winchester
308 Norma
375 Winchester
416 Ruger

Dewey(I didn't take either but I'm not part of the list)

Agree with oldtimer. I can see that some of those cartridges are not popular, but they're not obsolete. I read the other day a definition, think it was in a Nosler reloading manual,
Obsolescent = no maker currently chambers a gun in that cartridge
Obsolete = the above AND no ammo maker currently makes the cartridge for sale.

I'm surprised to see 7mm WSM listed there, my impression from looking through Browning, Ruger, Savage, and Remington lines last week is that the 7WSM is going strong?

Like others, looks like I'm attracted to the odd ones... have 284Win, and shoot 32special, 30-20, 348 Win, and 28GA. Good thing I hand load...

Of my present seven high powered rifle cartridge's that I own and use regularly, five of these cartridges, if not the rifles themselves have been on the market since between 1905 and 1925. The other two cartridges are neck up or downs, of earlier case designs.

The 33 Winchester. Shot a 200 grain bullet 2200 fps. This was an incredible deer cartridge back in it's time.

I think the 243 lovers in the world just fell over dead!!!

When I was a kid my great grandfather used to say "Earle a 44-40 will shoot right thru a 7" pine" he considered it a fine deer rifle and told me many times that he would "plunk em right behin the forwaaard shoulder" and let em run off a then roll a smoke and sit there and smoke it and then go pick up the track and follow it a few hundred yards and 7 out of ten times he would find the deer and 30% of the time he would never see em again......................... for him that was an awesome gun............... my grandfather on the other hand used to say a 44-40 will only put a "blue spot" on the eye of an axe , a thurty thurty will go thru one side and streach the other out and a thurty Govt will shoot right straight thru the eye of an axe! That was how they measured the strength of a cartridge in Northern Maine years ago....................... 8)
