This evening I moved onto the 308 Win. with these. Goal I set was 2500fps. Powder I used was Superformance with Alcan LRM primers. I only had some odd and end brass laying around. 1 group has 57.15grs H2O and the other 58grs H2O. I used the 57.15 for pressure test. Started at 41grs , way slow. Moved up to 46grs , getting there. 50grs is where it’s at.
41grs - 1893fps
46grs - 2198fps
50grs - 2509fps
51grs - 2522fps
52grs - 2590fps
I loaded all brass at 50grs with 1/4 turn crimp.
I fired 1 round of 58gr H2O brass , was a little slower as expected.
50grs - 2469fps
Just for fun I checked how much of Superformance a fired case holds.
57.15gr H2O holds 61.0grs
58.0gr H2O holds 62.2grs
I will get these in paper at some point , hopefully it will match the 30-06 results.

46grs - 2198fps
50grs - 2509fps
51grs - 2522fps
52grs - 2590fps

With that momentum of 220grs , it’s quite a thumper round.

I should imagine that mass pushed at that velocity would work for a wide variety of heavy game.

For whatever reason, I always figured to load these in a .300 H&H if I ever got one. Its a great deal on the bullets in any case!

Wow! I’m really impressed with your velocity results. Almost 2600 fps is more than I thought you’d get from a 308 Win shooting 220 grain bullets. That’s a stout load.

The brass I used was old Winchester with a larger volume. Even with that long 220gr bullet at 50grs it was just touching the powder. Superformance load data for 7mm-08 looked good so I gave it a whirl.

I'm impressed that you could fill 50 grains of ball powder and seat 220 grains on it, did it have a crush? I never liked a crush with over 45 grains using stick powders that seats deep in my 308 case, even with a drop tube. I don't crimp and neck tension is no more than 1 -2 thou. I keep the bullets .005 thousands off or more. When I seat bullets, I don't like to force seat them. When I do developments in .3 increments from 43 up to 46, my caliper measurements are not consistent when going past 44 grains because of the crush fit. I use Lapua brass and they do have less volume than the Winchester cases, if I could remember. I have only loaded 178 grain bullets or lighter in mine. At 178 grains, I'm able to run about 2725 fps with 43.5 grains of Varget, not a hot load. Your 2600 fps with 220 grains is a killer load with mass.

Well the 308 Win didn’t have a great showing with the 220s. Had to fight wind and rain today , like every day since mid spring.
