DD MK12 SPR 5.56 NATO 77 gr. SMK QL/Node/OBT Help

Hey guys,

I have a new rifle for a 2 man Team LR Tactical Match, a Daniel Defense MK12 5.56 NATO, wears a 18" BBL. 1:7" Twist. I wanting to use the bag of Military Brass I won last year, looks like a 1,000 pieces to me and it appears to be all FC 12 223 REM Brass. It's all cleaned, sized, and trimmed. I'm not familiar with this brass, and whether or not it's as tough as the military L.C. or W.C. brass. Does anyone here know?

I'll have to load up a few to test fire and then weigh them for H2O capacity.

I'm curious to know how much of a difference my other load for the M4 load developed for a 14.5" BBL 1:7" vs. the MK12's 18" BBL 1:7" will have on the OBT?

The M4 load was a follows:

77 SMK
22.8 H335
CCI-41
L.C. Brass @ 2.260" coal
(This is very close to the node 6 @ .804 ms.)

Since the DD MK12 wears a longer barrel I my attempt to use the RL-15, or RL-17 I have on hand (none of which is being used for anything else), VarGet, H4895, H322, BL-C(2) I have a little VV N133 <2lbs. I could go out an buy something else, but I'd prefer to use what I have on hand?

I've heard a few guys have been having good luck with IMR8208 XBR with the 77 SMK.

PS: I have not even shot this as of yet, but I plan on doing that tomorrow.
 
Kevin I'm using H4895 with the 77 Tipped MKs. Can't tell you speed, but I'm up around 24 grains in Lapua brass.

That 77 grain SMK changed the way I looked at the 5.56 on 2004. Accurate and just a solid level of performance.

Thanks Dewey for the QL info, very much appreciated! The Federal FC 12 223 brass I won seems to have a more constant weight then the L.C./W.C. 5.56 NATO brass I have. I got them from a S.O. sniper whom I shot with last year at the Steel Safari Match. Unbeknownst to me he had put them up on the prize table, and I ended up walking away with them a very happy person along with a few other gifts, one of which I gave to him. Only to find out he was the doner, great gift from a great guy.

Looks like these would fit the bill, have close to 100% burn rate and good speed:

VV N130

Accurate 2460

Of those I only have the VV N130, better then nothing I suppose but know one around here sells that stuff at the LGS, which means HAZM shipping if it does work? But the powder I have is roughly 10-15 years old, but stored correctly... if you believe in that?

I noticed a variance in the data above, I have the 77 SMK HPBT #9377, no G after it, and not the #7717 Tipped bullet you listed above. I assume I can just use the previous data which shows a max of 20.7. Let me know if that is the case, thanks.
 
That FC brass may have crimped primer pockets. Some of the Federal ammo from other government agency contracts have crimped primer pockets despite them not being specifically for the military.

I started w/ 1 each @ 20.3, 20.4, 20.5, 20.6 was too hot! Noticed powder leakage around the primer pocket @ 20.6 and yet case head expansion was all the same with each case, and some had no difference if on the large size. All were at .3750" after firing, and .3735-3740 sized brass. I went back to 20.3 for the 5th shot, shots 2-4 and even the last failed to keep the bolt in the open position, but did extract the spent cartridges fine.

Bolt carrier was lubed w/Rand CLP, which I've used before with zero issues, and a whole lot more burt powder between cleaning. The gun was cleaned prior to using, not sure if it's the powder, the H-buffer, or the lack of attention on DD? Never seen that with my Noveske N4 Afghan.

Not the best groups, the first round was 4 mils high off the backer board and the rest were all vertical an inch apart from each other. I just may abandon N130 after I test fire (5) rounds with the same powder charge, I don't like what I already see but the gun is still unproven to know for sure.

I did not pull out my chronograph as the gun wasn't sighted in, and I didn't want to take it out! Unlike a bolt gun there is no way to look down the barrel to make sure a bullet won't strike it? So I have no idea what speed they were going?

I'd like to know if it's the powder preventing the bolt carrier from remaining open on a empty magazine or the gun? I've used N130 before with the 60 Sierra HP in a Bushmaster Varmint rifle with no issues, so I'm not sure what the problem is with this one?

Thanks, I was just looking up Node 6, and 7 on their web site. I'm thinking this powder is just too fast and I should move on!

I need to find something that works with node 6 rather then 5. I looked back at my other load and it wasn't near the max, which would have been Node 6, but Node 7 w/the M4 14.5" barrel. I think I need to do the same with this gun, and look for something in Node 6 or 7.

Those last ones, 20.3-20.6 I was reaching too far for Node 5 for the 18" barrel, too hot, and not my style!

I'll just go up the ladder to a slower powder and see what I can find that will work with Node 6 at .9886 Ms or 1.0774 Ms at Node 7, which would be too slow, but Node 6 should work out.
 
Dewey, I have lots of RL-15, Nosler listed it as the most accurate with their 77/80 grain bullet. Would you please run me the QL for that powder and the 77 SMK HPBT #9377.

Thanks Dewey! It's pretty chilly here today, 21 degrees, but zero wind, which is more the norm. I'll have to bring in the powder and slowly warm it up since it's in a shipping container. Slow boat to china before I get to test them, but I'll let you know when I'm done.

I'm hoping the bolt carrier will cure the issue of not remaining in the open position on an empty magazine?

I got around to checking the H2O capacity for this brass. It's head stamped, FC 12 223 Rem, the year date tells me it's military brass, so here's what I measured.

I took two measurements, 1st with a well rounded water hump 31.5 grains, and the other just flush to slightly concave to the top of the neck, 31.0 grains.

So I'd either say the average of the two @ 31.25.

The VV N130 @ 20.6 grains was way too hot, odd since the MAST Brass had a capacity of 30.68 grains vs. these FC 12 223 Rem Brass at 31.5 when both were done having well rounded H2O tops.

I'd use the average of the two IMO of 31.25, only because it seems to be a better average method?

How does that change the Data? I'd assume a slight increase in powder to have the same effect.
 
Here you go. Your case capacity run in a 223 with RL15.
There's a decent one around .926 I think? 25.4 gr.

I went out to test 22.5 RL-15 prior to seeing your post.........The Nolser and Sierra manual both show 24.0 as a max with each of their 77 gr. bullets. I did have proper extraction and the bolt carrier was functioning fine this time leaving the bolt open on an empty magazine. Group was nothing to be excited about, but I'll post a pic for those interested.

I'll need to get out the chronograph ASAP, the weather isn't great today and I was being lazy. I'll have to test the 25.4 load when I get the chance, it may not be today though?

Might want to work up to that one based on the previous loads. :grin: Looks like if you can get there it should work for you.
If you do get the chrony out (and don't shoot it like I did) we can dial it in for you.
