Etip beyond 500 yds

Has anyone shot anything with the Etips beyond 500yds. I am thinking about trying them in my 7mm RM but saw the minimum velocity is listed at 1800 fps. According to some ballistic calculators the 150 gr would reach that around 450 yds. What are your thoughts?

I have ested the 7mm 150 gr E-Tip out of my 280 AI and recovered bullets at 100 and 300 yds.

For longer ranges, I think I would put the bullet on the shoulder just to ensure good expansion.

I haven't had a shot out past 200 yet on game, but in my experience, Nosler isn't BS'ing with their published info. If you're serious about taking 500+ yard shots, you should use a less robust bullet, IMO.

My experience with E-Tips under 200yds has been consistent with what Nosler publishes, for reference.

I know they say 1800 for a minimum, but I do think it would be smart to keep them above 2000 at impact range to be safe. Just my opinion though. Scotty

Yup, that is why I mentioned putting into a shoulder blade at longer ranges.

Here is a 200 ET out of a 338 WM. Recovered out of the dirt @ 600 yards. Impact should of been close to 1800.

As has been mentioned, I don't think i would make a habit of pushing the bottom end impact velocity of these.

I agree for the most part.
While I don't hunt at those ranges, looking at the pic's on Nosler site of the 2000 fps impact,, I don't know that I would go below 2200 fps terminal myself, and with .30 cal or less. It don't take a lot of frontal opening to get done what needs, but then I want a larger caliber.

Yeah, I can't see me pushing them bullets to the minimum really. Just about any of the rifles I would use the ET's in would stay above 2000 out to my hunting limits anyhow. Scotty

This is a very interesting topic and has me thinking about what happens if they ban lead in hunting bullets? Sounds like no more long range hunting. Great pictures guys.

Whit what velocity did you use? In a 7mm mag you should be able to get 3100 easily with the 150 etip. If you want to use a lead free bullet for long range 600 yards plus. I would wait another month or so. The new Barnes 168gr lrx should be out soon. I personally don't trust lead free bullets for long range though.

I personally don't trust monolithic bullets like the TSX or TTSX for long range on game either, because they are not consistent in opening up at lower velocities, and this is after four years of trying them. I would much rather use a cup core or bonded bullet at long range than any monolithic bullet.

Accubonds baby!

Good call Pop. I wanna mess with the ET a little in the 300WSM but I will stay light to keep the speed up. Really, the ABs will do just about anything I want done. If they won't, I know the PTs will. Scotty

I used Handloads.com. Using 3100fps it calculates 1850fps @ 400yds and 1722fps @ 450fps. I usually don't get to shoot past 400yds where I hunt. I guess if I want to shoot farther I will need to use my 338 Win Mag, that will have enough energy to 500yrs.

listen to the man, I ever tell y'all I like accubonds?

AccuBond exit at a range of 702 yards, impact velocity was 2280 fps, now Ive only had one not exit once (wasn't the bullets fault) but out of 39 deer shot with them, from 290 to 1350 yards, all the exits looked about the same depending on resistance thats met, if the shoulder blade isn't hit, the exit is about 1/2 that size, reguardless of range or velocity

I guess I think of monometals as being a solution to a specific problem; that is, ultra-high impact velocities, which even in ubber-high velocity rounds, tend to happen closer-in, so I never would have thought the ETip a 600 yard bullet, even in my .257 Weatherby.
