I am about to recommend the Nosler 165 gr Partition reloads for my hunting party this coming year for 30-06 and 300 Win Mag rifles. We will be hunting both Buck and Elk at the same time. The chances are good that there will not be any shot over 380 yds, and more than likely in the 100-200 yard range.

I know JD338 uses them often. I have seen a good few state they love the performance but they are not very consistently accurate. Is the reason why they are not consistently accurate because one has not taken the time to work the best load for their rifle or is there something in their build that disallows a consistent accurate bullet. I want to get a maximum size group of about 3/4" at 100 yards. Is this possible with these bullets?

Thanks

Yes it's possible. My .308 Win shoots them very nicely. Usually at or under 3/4" at 100 yards.

My .30-06 is an old, well worn rifle in need of a new barrel, but it generally keeps them at about an inch, or a bit over, at 100 yards anyway. I like the .30 cal, 165 gr Nosler Partition, and 165 gr Noslers in general.

Thanks Guy!
I believe the Nosler Partitions it is for the 30-06

After re-re-reviewing the Nolser #6 and other references, I might be thinking the 180s for the 300 Win Mag might be the better bullet. Any other thoughts?

My 30-06 shoots the 165gr NP .75-1.0" very consistently. It didn't take much load development either. Personally, for elk I would use the 180gr NP for both the -06 and the WM.

YMMV

Steve, the 165 or 180 will work fine. I haven't shot a bunch of the 165 PTs but I can see no reason they wouldn't be as accurate as any other Nosler. Either will hammer elk from the 06 or 300

I have never had a problem getting PT's to shoot under MOA in several calibers and weights.
The 165 gr PT would be a good all around weight in both the 30-06 and the 300 Win Mag.

In the 300 WIn Mag, work up to 75.0 grs of RL 22 and the 180 gr PT. This load should get you 3000 fps MV and under MOA.

The 180gr Partition is perfect for 30-06 and 300Win mag on elk or for that matter any big game you generally hit with the Partition. I find the 180gr Partition both in my 30-06 and 300Win mag accurate and under an inch.

I've loaded a ton of the 165 Partitions for the 30-06 and for the 300 WSM. I haven't loaded many for a 300 WM. They give me good to excellent accuracy in any of a number of rifles. I believe it is a fine bullet for the calibre.

In my 06 and 300 Win Mag, I have been using the 180 gr Partition on elk since about 1961, because they work. They work the same way every time, time after time. Its almost boring !!! Did I mention they work. !!!

I have been shooting the 165 Partition for over 40 years and my Winchester Model 70 .30-06 will group the 165 grain Partition into groups under 3/4 inchs at 100 yards, month in and month out. In fact on a good day, with weighed and sorted bullets, this .30-06 will shoot under 1/4 MOA for 3 shot groups to at least 200 yards.

Here is an example of the accuracy of the Nosler PT.
250 gr PT seconds in a 338 RUM.
This is a 4 shot group.

Nice

Did the powder burns on the target give it away?

338winmag, I gotta tell you, with the .308 Win all the load development I did with the 165 Nosler Partition was to seat it at magazine length over my standard load: 45 grains of Varget. I use that with all my 165 & 168 gr bullets. Sometimes I hop it up a little, just for the heck of it.

Also - in a .30-06, H4350 is terrific with the 165's!

Yeah, in a .300 mag, I'd go with the 180, or even a 200. Particularly for elk. Just because.

I can't add much to has been said. As I haven't found the NPT's that particularly fickle to load with. In this instance or situation, I would prefer the 180 gr. PT however. Even if it means working alil harder to get closer on the longer shot scenario's.

I'm a kind of heavy fo caliber type so in the 30-08 I go with 180 gr. and in the .300 Win. mag I use 200 gr. Works for me.
However you wanted to know if we thought the 180 gr. PT might be a better choice in the .300s so my opinion would be yes, go with the 180 gr. bullet in the .300.

My buddy just got a M70 Extreme Weather 300WSM. Pretty sure I am going to load some 165 AB's for him. I happen to have a couple bags on the shelf and he won't be hunting anything but deer for awhile. I haven't ever done much with the 165's, so I am kinda excited to see what the WSM does with them. Looks like 3150 or so is possible. That would be a good shooter in my book.

I used the 165 Partitions for several years in the .300 H&H (on deer) and switched to a .300WSM which my son still has. It shot really tight little sub-MOA groups with this bullet and I killed one deer with it at about 300 yards DRT.
