I have a pile of nickle plated 300 win mag..... I'd dearly love to blow it out to 458!
I'm worried about how it would look/perform????????
And I'm concerned about scratching my 50 year old dies
what say ye?

I'd do it Chet. I anneal 270 WSM nickel cases. I would certainly anneal and blow them of. What's to lose?

Only thing I can think could cause a serious problem is the expansion of the neck that dramatically may cause the nickel plating to flake off. You should notice it on the first case or two, I'd think.

I might be interested.

On another note.
"FORGET NICKEL-PLATED BRASS.... I liked the looks and feel of nickel-plated cases, but I don't load them anymore and here is why. The cases are strong and it is easy enough to outside neck turn them. That is not the problem. The nickel-plating on the case neck ID is like sandpaper. The only way you might be able to remove this grit is with a case neck ID reamer if you have a "tight neck" chamber and enough neck wall thickness to work with. If you have a loaded nickel-plated round laying around and don't believe me, just pull the bullet. It will look like you pulled it out of a tube of 180 grit wet/dry sandpaper. If you pull the bullet out of a brass case mouth that has been carefully chamfered and polished with the steel wool process above, it will be essentially like out of the bullet box. "

I disagree. Other thn his steel wool thing,if you pull a bullet from a conventional brass case that has been properly chamfer it will also look like what he says the nickel cases do. Sometimes I have to pull bullets for one reason or another and they are just as badly marked from brass or nickel plated cases. I call it BS. Let me know how many rounds and what you'd want for them. Maybe we can make a deal, trade? I might have one full box of new .458 Win. Brass left. I use it to convert into .375/338 Mag. brass but I'm good on that for a while. Good brass to convert to .458 Win. would be .338 Win. mag. and 7MM Rem. mag. Just fireform them.
Anyway, let me know how many and what brand and we'll work something out.

They are stamped FC..... once fired (180gr Partition pp, federal premium)
I'm thinking there is slightly less than 80 pieces. I could probably fit them all into a small flat rate box.
I'll count them tonight.

Guys,
I brought the nickle plated 300 win mag empties today.
there are 69 pieces total, and I can fit them all in a small flat rate box.

PJgunner, I'm definitely interested in a trade involving a box of new 458's

Wondermutt, I'll let you know as soon as I hear from PJG

I just took a look out in my shed and I don't have a box of .458 mag. brass. I do have a bag of of 50 new Winchester .458 mag, brass. It's unopened so I have to assume the count is correct.
I use .458 Mag. brass to make brass for my .375 Taylor, a .338 Win. mag. necked up to .375 caliber. Currently I have plenty so I am OK with a swap it it's OK with you. If you want to do it PM contact info and I'll send 'em off.
