Got my Coyote bait today!

More bullet problems.............................. exactly what I was afraid of...................... last nite at 2am the reporter went off and I go upstairs and get ready to shoot , turn on the ND3 lazer, and there is a small coyote paceing around that doesn't really want to leave, but is pretty nervous, and wont hold still either, so I let one fly, and heard a definite hit, he goes down spinning around; BUT gets back up and begins to runs off .................... I grab a handheld spotlight and am trying to see what happens, and he runs about 200 plus yards, so now he is about 500yds out, dragging his right rear leg, then stops and does two circles biting at himself, where he is hit poorly in the back of the haunches............................. "here we go again" So even a 25/06; flinging them out there at 3300fps, with a TOO hard of a bullet, wont get it done either.............. same old story a poor hit is a poor hit, I do feel had I used a bullet that had more explosive characteristics, than these ProHunters [that apparently work nicely on Red Stags ] I may have had a very different outcome. I HATE wounding stuff. This morning I went out thinking he would be out on the ice somewhere.................. he <<wasn't>> he actually made the far shore and with the angle he took, that's over 1000 yds............... :( I am pretty disappointed after all the problems I have had over the years; with wrong bullets on Coyotes, that I would mess around with an unknown bullet, and I think I put waaaaay to much confidence in the gun because it is a couple hundred ft a sec faster than the .243. The coyote basically acted exactly like they do so often with the 243, with the 87gr Vmax bullets . I will definitely be loading some 90gr Blitzking asap.................. 100gr ProHunters will be shelved for animals that are in the 200lb  class.............. Ah boy....

But for now remembered I had a few 75 gr
Vmax so just loaded a box of them with 50grs 4064, and
Also had a few 75 gr Sierra HP and charged them up with same load??? We will see how that works till I can get some 90 Blitzkings here.

The best .25 caliber coyote whacker I've ever loaded was an 87gr Speer Sptizer. At around 3200 fps from my .257 Roberts it whacked a lot of coyotes and not one got away. I even blew the snoze off one coyote on a running shot. It just went down and laid there for a finishing shot.

Well I am going to try these 75 gr Vmax and see what happens Bruce, its all I have to load for them at the moment until the 90gr Blitzking bullets get here. I bet they will work much better than the Pro Hunters did, on a smallish coyote at 300yds,but thanks for that tip!

Can you see the orange plate over in the woods at 550 yds?

Moose is exactly 300 yds and plate is 550 , boy it looks close in this photo on 20x Zoom! I will add another photo unzoomed so you can see the other prospective!

I have shot alot of coyotes with the 75 gr V-max in the .243 cal, I never had a problem with runners. I found that some shots they were perfect small entrance and no exit . And the next time it could be a quite similar distance / circumstance and they would leave a big exit.. I still use them but not it I'm saving fur. Dec- early March.
The 90 gr blitz sounds interesting for sure , be watching for updates.

Super 7,
Have shot two 30 lbers with the 90gr Blitzkings
Neither hit very well, both shots pass thru's, one in
The kidneys, one 2" under the backbone. Both instant
Kills. I think I may have found the perfect bullet for
Our unique situation we have to deal with.

Well its now the 20th of March and there is only a rib cage and a spine left out there, the birds have picked the meat off everything, the only coyote I know left here now has even eaten ALL of that moose's hide, they don't leave anything! We have just had two nites down in the low teens again and big storm tonite , but I think I am pretty much out of bait for the season................ 10 dead , two wounded , one of them was probably hit in the guts, and lost so much blood in the first 300 yds as he departed the scene of the accident , was hit with the 75gr Vmax at 3600fps, and I doubt they ever made enough Pepto to get him straighten back out, the other was hit with a 100gr ProHunter that whistled right thru the right hip at a steep angle , I saw him three weeks later , still kicking on three clyinders, But there is ONE left for sure , so I guess there were about a dozen here at the beginning of the winter. Should have a lot less mortality this spring on fawns? I sure hope I have helped them some. The photos of most of them are under the thread" 90gr Blitzkings"...............

You did your part for the welfare of the ungulates, Earl. Nothing wrong with that.

Season is truly over now , ice went out on Sunday................ wound up with a total of 12 coyotes off the moose kill over a 3 month period................ very satisfied with that number.

Good job Earle, that should help the your deer population for sure (y).
Thank for the post it was great to get a few stories and photos on your hunt.

Blessings,
Dan
