Dan, like Dr Mike, we are glad your still with us.

I did nit read all twenty pages, but we do a considerable amount of snow shoeing and have been told that it is a good work out for the heart.

Your jocularity brings a smile. :)
I went to the movie because it had snow in it.
You got it but just don't know it yet.
Shirley works at the diner and serves a mean cup of Joe. :) :):):):)

Thought it was time to open up this old post again and see how everyone is doing. Its already "too late" to begin your training for this fall, if you haven't started by now you are behind the curve. I did my annual fire fitness test yesterday, the goal is to carry a 45 lb pack 3 miles in less than 45 min.. I managed a 42:30 which is not bad for a old man. The three rabbits i fell in behind, maybe had a combined age equal to mine. I have been training hard and my back has been rewarding me for that effort with a lot of pain. A really nice surgeon forecasted that event a couple of years ago and it looks like she was right. Probably a back tune up later this year after fire and elk season. Stay at it all, fitness is one of the primary keys to a long and productive life.

If I can hunt from a bicycle, or in a gym, I'm doing great! That's me, the non-bicyclist looking fellow, on the mountain bike, trying to keep up with my far more serious cyclist friends:

Doing lots of riding, quite a bit of lifting, and trying to get out and hike at least once a week as well. Am doing a LOT better than last year, when I head neck surgery. Coming back pretty well. Sixty years old now, and trying to rebuild. For a few years I had that neck injury, and didn't know it. Was losing strength because of it... Lots of strength. Coming back now.

I've bucked hay, sunk railroad ties, and had to hike in the cinders around my place. Been busy enough that I haven't been able to exercise. My knees are doing pretty good so I must be getting enough exercise around the place.

Well my clothes are still fitting but I have put on some weight still in the gym 5 or 6 times a week. But started again today to eat cleaner and more time on the Elliptical trainer up to 12.5 minutes at level 5 and doing almost a mile and a half every time I am in the gym. I have my heart rate up to around 130bpm which my trainers state is excellent.
Staying with it is hard but it does become a habit .

Blessings,
Dan

I just took my first pain pill in two or three months.

I must be doing something right then. Just had some rain today and it looks like the monsoon season is upon us. That always sets my arthritis off.

I guess I'm exercising without thinking about it. I find myself adjusting well to the altitude change too.

I don't need to go to the gym to get a work out, I go to work to work out! according to my pedometer I average at minimum five miles walking in an eight hour shift at work!

Heart rate is the key, numerous studies show that your benefits come with your heart rate increase. Any movement beats sitting still, however most neither work nor shop, or drink beer at a fast enough rate to get their heart accelerated to the level necessary to achieve positive results. It's insane what eating a hamburger will do for you calorie wise. After eating one you have consumed enough to to have met or exceed your daily intake on numerous levels. In addition add a soft drink and some fries and your good for all day. It then takes all day of hard physical exercise to work it off without eating any more. Unless your a long distance runner the only way is long duration with a weighted pack or elevation. A couple of hours daily is the key, and most of us are hard pressed to do that.

I have missed the last three days, house painting does not count.

Elkman you hit it right on the head. Our trainers here at rehab state don't worry so much about our weight as worry about eating clean and getting our heart rate up during exercise.
The bad stuff we should cut out or at least do in moderation .

Blessings,
Dan

Wow we haven't talked about this in quite some time. As I am in Arizona I have been able to keep up my daily fitness routine, almost every day. Torrential rain has interrupted it a couple of times but in most cases any interruption has been for other priorities. I try and begin each day with some yoga exercises, (primarily for lower back and balance) and my morning hike some weights. I have been really cautious about the weights as I have had both shoulder reconstruction and back surgery in the last couple years. Well any way last month I set a goal of walking a 100 miles in 20 days. These are my morning hikes, they are not all day hikes on trails or other adventures, just exercise. I do head to the desert one day a week for an early morning coyote hunt, and do count that mileage. Yesterday was the 20th day, and I ended up with 106 miles, and with 16,000 feet change in elevation. Not a huge amount but not to bad for two hour workout on a daily basis.
How are you all doing, preparing for this next fall, as spring arrives the time to get out and about is coming for most of us soon. (y)

I've ignored the bicycle since October or November and have been relying on hikes and regular trips to the gym. The hikes have mostly been on snowshoes, with a few trips on Nordic skis. It's been one heck of a winter here in central Washington and it's been a LOT of fun to be back out on snowshoes so much.

I too am being careful in the gym. Have some well-worn body parts and some repaired body parts... Gotta be a little careful, but am still getting great workouts!

Actually, got a fair bit of exercise the past few months, simply shoveling snow...

Regards, Guy

I've been bucking hay pretty regularly for a workout.
