Took the .375 H&H to the range this morning to work on a little load developement. In spite of a called shot with the Stabl 6.5 the group was good, two touching and the called third shot. 2503 fps. I’ll add 1/2 grain to see if I gain a little velocity.
Then I fired a load of H4350, no adjustment to the Vx3Hd 1.5x5. This load came in at 2970 fps. And printed 4 inches higher. Nice one inch cloverleaf. I was surprised it printed so much higher with only 70 fps faster.
I kinda think I could get a little bit better groups if I but a higher power scope on the rifle, but consistent moa out of 5 power is certainly good enough for the task at hand.
Both were shot with 300 gr. Barnes TSX.

Is the H4350 speed of 2970 a typo? Maybe 2570 fps? My limited experience with monos is that they hit to a different POI. My guess is barrel harmonics.

A mono at 2500 fps will still provide plenty of performance on a cape buffalo! A little less velocity will actually improve the penetration quality of an expanding bullet for the big bovines. I would be tempted to shoot a couple more groups with that load to see how group sizes do without having to call a flier, and for consistency.

This penetration quality was one of reasons behind the development of the 376 Steyr after consultation with PHs that were actually downloading their softs in the 375 H&H for better penetration. And when my shoulder was bad back in the early 2000's, led me to build the 376 instead of a 375 Wby. The reduced felt recoil was a blessing to the shoulder!
