Kodiak brown bear recommendation

If i get my BC grizzley bear draw this spring- i will be using my Rem m700 375 H&H with a 300 gr A-Frame bullet ! I am hopeing ! Cheers RJ

It took me to long to get here, from the time I was asked to join and respond, there is nothing now to add. You have received good advise. The grand old daddy 375, with a 300 Swift will accomplish the results your hoping for. We also use the Woodleighs with good results. As to the bears and their size, you will be hunting where they are big and close. Great adrenaline hunt Best of luck to you sir

Africa Huntress,

Welcome to the forum. You will find a warm welcome among this crowd. We appreciate anyone who hunts and/or shoots. If the individual hand loads, so much the better. From your handle, may I assume you are a member of the distaff side of life? One of my observations that has assured that hunting will continue for many years to come is the number of ladies taking up the sport. Witness the number of people posting here who include their wives, daughters and girlfriends. Again, welcome. When you get a chance, tell us little about your hunting. If you have some pictures, so much the better.

Thank you sir.

I know a few folks on this forum and they had invited me over several times and I am glad I finally got here. My husband travels a lot in his business and the children are out of the house, so it gives me the opportunity to hunt all over the world, with my favorite places to hunt being Africa ( home at this moment ), Alaska, New Zealand, and Argentina ( mainly for wing shooting ). We do reload, sort of -- we have a couple people work with us and to be honest do most of the work. We use G.S. Custom, Woodleigh, and Swift the most. However our friends on this forum have convinced us to give Nosler a try and we have ordered some. Thank again for the nice welcome

I do shoot some Woodleigh and Swift bullets, and I know several people on this forum who use the GS Custom bullet. I've worked up loads with some, but I've never used them in a hunt, yet. There is no question but that these are all superb bullets, designed to perform admirably. I think you'll appreciate the Nosler bullets.

Africa Huntress,

Welcome to the forum, glad to have you here with us.
Looking forward to hearing more about your hunting trips.

Aleena, we're looking forward to your hunts and pictures. I'm pretty excited about the Noslers as well. I know you mentioned using a 280AI and a 416 Rigby with Nosler ammo I think? A full report on your findings would be excellent, as would some info on your VX6's!

Hooray! I heard from my outfitter and I got my permit! Time to throw some lead and just see what goes out the snout the best energy/velocity/accuracy. Just need some cooler days to go out...105* today here in Longmont, CO. It was cooler in Phoenix and Florida today!

Congratulations on the permit remember lots of photos of the hunt and of course your trophy :)
Let us know what bullet you are going to use along with the particulars.

Blessings,
Dan

Here's a couple of bear photos that Dad snapped while he was fly fishing for salmon on Kodiak a few years ago:

On the flats, with a salmon:

A couple of coastal brown bear photos from my Alaska fishing trips, the "twins" too doggone close to the fishing shack:

Surf bear - right at the mouth of the river, on the beach:

Everybody shares the same fishing holes, my size 12 boot:

Enjoy your hunt! I'd likely use the 300 gr Nosler Partitions from a .375 H&H if deliberately seeking out one of those oversized coastal brown bears or Kodiak bears.. They can get HUGE!

75 grains of H4350 works real well with the various 300 gr bullets, churning up about 2550 fps and good, reliable accuracy. It's not a max load, but a good one.

Best of luck, Guy

The presence of these magnificent creatures will inspire a sense of awe, that's for sure. To hunt them, I want enough rifle to ensure full penetration and to maximize energy delivered on target.

Boring is good though!! I definately wouldn't want to have a pissed off one trying to tear my head off.

Wheres the EXCITEMENT in that with a 9 ft G BEAR ? LOL  RJ

10 days and counting until I fly out for Kodiak. Received an email from my guide who grew up in Kodiak. He says the deer population was majorly reduced due to the severe weather last winter, but he thinks he can find me a nice little buck while I am there.
He says he has been trying to tie up a nice bear for me, but cannot find a chain heavy enough...tee hee. My goal is an over 9 footer.
He's been taking goat hunters out and has seen a number of nice brown bear.
Shot the Sako .375 again last Sunday (shooting it every couple of weeks now) and the Barnes 300 gr TSX shoots a little better than the Swift A Frame and the Nosler Partition...1/4-1/2" better (groups 1 1/4 to 1 3/4"). So who cares when the game is the size of a VW bug. Going to shoot one more time this week to finalize what I am taking. The guide and outfitter recommend the Swift A Frame, but they say any of the three will do as long as I put it where it counts...no pressure there!
They prefer me shooting one no closer than 75 yards, nor further than 200 yards. Too close and they destroy anything within several yards of them. Too far and the bullet looses too much energy and you may not have the opportunity to take a follow up shot. "Keep shooting until it stays down". Interesting conversation.
