Model 70, 270 WSM

For me 100 yards is a long shot with my .44. It’s a Ruger Super Blackhawk with the 7 1/2” barrel. Off sandbags I’ve came up with a load that does 1 1/2”. I was ecstatic with that. But that’s under range conditions, not field.
Shooting a single shot, specialty pistol, like a break open contender or encore in a straight wall cartridge, is quite a bit easier than shooting a revolver. Shooting a rear or center grip, specialty, pistol, especially a bolt action rig, is easier than shooting a contender or encore pistol with a bottleneck cartridge.

I could put you on one of my XP‘s, from the bench, and you would be hitting steel at 400 and 500 yards so easily, you would not believe it

First, I got brass! I’ll be loading this afternoon once I prep the brass.

I watch your posts and they always interest, and amaze me at the ranges you connect on. I really like your center grip handguns. I may start looking for a XP. Is there anything to look for with the bolt actions that is different than a rifle?

Brass-Yes!

On a center-grip pistol build, PM me your phone number.
A conversation will be be quicker, if you have questions.

I have owned, and still own, a number of Featherweights. Some received a fore-end pad to brace the barrel. Some received a partial relief of the barrel channel. Some were free-floated for the length of the barrel. I let each rifle tell me what it wanted. As it happens, both of the 270 WSMs were fully free-floated. Consequently, of the fifteen or so Featherweights I have owned, only one was ever sent down the road because of poor accuracy. It was a 7X57 and I was homing in on a load when I was offered a 300 WSM in exchange for the rifle. I did let that one go before I found the accuracy potential I desired. The Featherweight is my favourite rifle, I would say. Or it is at least very near to perfection for me.
Same approach here. Let the rifle decide.

I’d love to have an old Winchester Model 100 in 284 Win. I love the lines of it and it’s a great auto loader woods rifle. I had a 308 as my first deer rifle. I got 3 deer with that rifle. I was young and knew everything, and saw more white flags than standing deer.

I have 3 ladders loaded for the 270 WSM. One each of IMR 4831, Staball 6.5, and Staball HD with the 130 grain E-Tip. Those were solid performers on the Hodgdon Reloading page, and I had them on hand. Hoping to get to the range Wednesday. It’s closed on Monday and Tuesday.

Edit: If none of those powders work I’ll try RL23, and 25 next.

FYI: 66 grains of 4831 takes up as much space as 74 grains of Staball HD. Just an observation. Also both are compressed loads.
