My new Winchester M70 in 375 RUM... with pictures

Nice video Maurice, that was surprisingly less recoil than I expected. However in my experience caliber size doesn't always equate more recoil. I have shot 375's and 338's that kicked less than 300's and 7mm's and this is mostly I believe as you said that the guns are a tad heavier.

I want a 375 really bad now.

Have fired two different Holland and Hollands and liked them but I may have to give the RUM a try. Or the Ruger...

Like I said earlier, the added weight is welcome on the bench. Now you can debate the fact that when hunting you carry more than you shoot, so some folks rather carry a lighter gun. I think the REM 700 is to light in that caliber and if you look at websites like gunbroker, you will notice many Rem 700 in the ultra mag clalibers for sale. Most guys bought a couple boxes of ammo, went to the range, shot 4 or five rounds and said, that's it, I had enough punishment for a lifetime and sell their new guns. Perhaps 10.5 lbs scoped is heavy for most people, for me its perfect in such calibers. Just my opinion.

So...

Velocity, accuracy etc.....

Fotis, I agree 100% with you. I did not bother taking any pictures of my targets yesterday because I was busy sighting in the gun. I only shot 16 rounds being pressed for time. So far, 92 gr of H4350 gave velocities averaging 2825 fps give our take 10 fps. It seemed to group around 3/4 of an inch at 100 yards. 93 gr started opening up again. I promise, I will take pictures of the targets next time out.

Man your gunsmith went above and beyond building that gun!! I have shot the .300 RUM, but never any of the others. Looking forward to seeing some pics of that gun leaning across a dead moose in the 2011 hunting pictures this year. Congrats

I am.....

I would rather see group sizes and velocities and even pictures of them. Now that is the beauty rifles are made from!

That's a rifle of the quality a Guide in Africa would smile about. It's no-nonsense, open sights, short and as dependable as a mother's love. You have an absolute treasure of a rifle. As far as the recoil goes I have no problem with the recoil of my 375 RUM. My 7 mm RUM gives me two eyelashes above my right eye if I get a little sloppy with my hold. It's a much faster recoil. If you're not going to some far away exotic place to hunt with that rifle you should at least watch "The Snows of Kilamanjaro" once or twice.
It's a pure beauty!

I wish to thank everyone who replied to this thread and gave positive feedback. I posted on another well known website and sure did not get as many replies lol. This rifle will be my main hunting rifle from deer to moose and hopefully, one day, the large antelopes of Africa... I just finished reading Death in the Long Grass and about to start Horn of the Hunter. Raising a young family is my main priority right now, however, the goal is to take everyone to Africa in 15 to 20 years ;) My wife said she always wanted to do a photo safari. I told her (you can photograph them before, and after
For now I'm very happy to follow Capstick and Ruark in their trek across the African continent.

Good response. You are correct that raising your family is priority number one. How blessed we are to have children, and to be entrusted with the privilege of instilling in them character. Good for you, enigma.

enigma,

That 375 RUM is impressive! Way to go.

I was goofing around today with my video editing software. I slowed down the video to show the recoil in very slow motion. As you can tell its very manageable from the bench with energy levels hovering around 5000 ft/lbs. Next time out I will snap some pictures of the targets for Fotis

Nice. A good stock design and fit will make a big difference in felt recoil.
I am guessing that you are still getting rocked with about 50 ft lbs recoil which is very similar to my 338 RUM with 250 gr bullets at 3000 fps.

Ya just got to love it.

I have not ran any numbers but I'm sure I am close to that figure. The scary part is that I still have another 150 FPS or extra velocity if I desire to push it that fast  but I don't lol

I have more felt recoil with my 338RUM shooting 250ABs at 2966fps than I do with my 375RUM shooting 260ABs at 2990fps. Now, I attribute this to the weight difference. The 338RUM is an XCR model (platic stock)and the 375RUM is an LSS model (laminate stock). Never really felt the recoil when I shot my muley and 4x4 elk last fall.

Maurice, finally was able to watch that video and man, what an awesome rifle you have there. That 375RUM is very impressive! Scotty

It should work magic on moose

Oh, absolutely. It'll turn that big, homely ungulate into attractive T-bones and Sirloins. Great magical qualities in that rifle.

Man, I should hope so. That is going to be something akin to a moose getting hit by a truck! Can't wait to see your Fall pictures of that M70 laying over the moose! Scotty
