Is it better to be a touch long then short when cutting pillars for a stock?

Cut them a hair long and file/grind for a perfect fit(unless you have access to a mill then do them exactly the length you need them). You want all metal to metal contact. Another option is to leave them just long enough to have the action not touch the stock and bed the whole action. My preference is to fit them exactly, then remove any contact points in the stock then bed the action.
