QuickLoad questions thread...

Don't really think so TD other than the defaults in QL.
Problem with a Ba number, as you're finding out, is it's just an educated guess. Sometimes they're close, most of the time not. :grin:
Only way I know to make sense of them is the same old thing. Get a case capacity from 5 or 10, then I take the average, throwing out any abnormalities.
Then chrono 10 or so. Again, throw out any weird ones. Average.
Adjust Ba for that bullet, case, primer and powder combo. Should be close at that point.
Remember, Ba will change with powder lots, case changes, bullet changes and primer changes.
Point is, the Ba for a 7 Mag for example shooting 175s in a Nosler case with a CCI primer is going to probably have a different Ba with a different bullet or case or primer.
Clear as mud? :lol:
It can be amazingly precise once the work is done and allow you to really tune it in and develop a nice load. I wouldn't be without it as I shoot quite a few wildcats. (I like weird rifles)
 
I pulled a Hornady ELD-X 178 grain bullet from a box of 308 Winchester Pro Hunter ammo. The bullet is a whopping 1.405 inches long.

Powder charge was 42.5 grains of a small extruded kernel that looks similar to Varget but who knows? I loaded the bullet back into case and it engaged riflilng around 2.917 or a bit longer. I was able to seat it to 2.86 in my Accuracy International steel magazine.

Could I as for a Quick load for Varget at 2.860 and 2.8 OCL?

And if you think it is worthwhile, I would be curious to see other suitable powders.

I have some ELD-X backordered. Looks like not much difference in velocity or pressure with the longer seating depth. Thanks!

I did get good data points at 500, 600 and 800 yards at 2660 fps with the precision hunter ammo and will try again at 1,000 with a +32.5 MOA hold. The 178 ELDX is as flat shooting as Hornady claims.

I did not try 4064 as I just had the one bullet and I used Varget. At higher velocity 4064 and Varget bulked out the case with the 175 Barnes Match Burner to the point it was difficult to control OCL, and it is shorter than the ELDX.

Based on the Quickload data and my experience so far with the longer 175's I will probably try Varget, CFE223, Win 748 and RL15. I will let you all know how it goes.

Come ups as follows.

500 yd 10.5 MOA
600 yd 14.25 MOA
800 yd 22.5 MOA
1000 (probably) 32.5 predicted by JBM software. I tried a six oclock hold with 34 moa and still shot over and right of a 24 inch gong. So sounds possible. I currently run Barnes Match Burners at 35 MOA.

The Match burners have a G7 of about .255 which is similar to the Berger 175 VLD and the SMK at .243 (as I recall). JBM shows the 178 ELD-X at .267 G7 and the come ups are within 1/4-1/2 moa of what I recorded.

Reloading the 178 factory loaded bullet with 42.5 Varget gave me 2620 fps at 2.86 OCL. So my rifle with 20 inch barrel is running about 50 fps faster than QL predicts for a 24 inch. Looks like I will be safe at either OCL at about 2650 fps w Varget which is close to what I had hoped for.

If nothing else the longer OCL reduces pressure a bit so I will start there.

32.5 MOA at 1000 yards is really flat shooting for a 308, and it looks like it will do that. I purchased 40 more rounds of the precision hunter ammo which was on sale at Bimart. Midway has the ELD-X on backorder. 208 grain ELDX bullets are available at sportsmans warehouse if any Bend, Oregon area .300 win magnum shooters want to give them a try.

I literally just purchased Quickload and I'm still finding my way through it. Weighting factor was explained to me by another user as a "mysterious" number. I've been looking for the Case Capacity window(like the one you have above) that allows me to enter the data like you did, so I could get a more accurate Weighting Factor number. I can't find it and not sure if it exists in the newest version of QL. Thankfully, you did it for the 7STW which just happens to be the cartridge I'm using QL to help develop some loads for.

What's the best way to start using QL when you want to develop a new load? I'm using the 175gr Partition. Was planning on using H1000 but open to using any powder that may be better. Usually I would start with 74.0gr H1000 and do a seating depth test. Once I have the best COAL, then work up the load from there. So, do the seating depth test, find the best one and enter the data into QL and see if it falls on a node in OTL (or adjust the Ba until it falls on a node)??? Then load up 10 and run them over the chronograph and put the velocity into QL and make whatever adjustments to Ba to match up with my velocity. Then, use the table to help find a higher velocity node and load up your rounds from below that ultimate charge and work up to it?
Somebody help me streamline this process!!
Also, do the twist rate of the barrel matter in QL? I don't see a box to enter that value, but I'm sure it exists somewhere

Start by getting your case capacity, a seating depth (doesn't have to be the 'most accurate'), and velocity. QL is *blindly guessing* without your real world variable data.

The same box that you enter your case h2o), or wondering where it is calculated in the window I posted? (It's the bottom line "rough estimate...")

Twist rate... I'm on the fence about its effects, but you can change that in the rifles info menu. I'm not informer of QL to show you where exactly, but you build your own gun file and can reference it for more accurate estimates. I think the default variables that QL uses for rifle data is based on the .308 and 30-06.

Hate to cut this short but I am being pulled away to adult (taxes). Hope this will give you some guidance to help you get started.

I know where to enter or adjust the Weighting Factor on the main screen. What I'm specifically looking for is the exact window you had posted called Case Capacity that has the schematic of the cartridge case and where you can manually enter all the measurements of the case. I know it spits out a Rough Estimate of Weighting Factor at the bottom of the window. This is what I'm looking for. Where do I find that little pop up window??

The other way to do it easier is buy QuickDesign which is made to work with QuickLoad. You can modify, alter or adapt cartridges in it and run them in quickload

Thank you very much. I found it. The "change data records in active file" scared me to click on it because I thought I could mess something up. I appreciate the help. QL is pretty awesome and I know I'm just scratching the surface of what it can do at the moment. Wish I purchased it about a year ago, because it would have helped me and saved me an incredible amount of time.

HSE II, I am not sure the 338-06 Ackley is added to the profile, but you can use 338-06 info and probably add 5% to the top to get an idea. I'll take a peak this evening.

Pull this out and put it in a separate topic and I'll bet you get some more data. It sounds like a cool build. I'd be with a 26" barrel you'll get great speeds from it.

HSE II, I am not sure the 338-06 Ackley is added to the profile, but you can use 338-06 info and probably add 5% to the top to get an idea. I'll take a peak this evening.

Pull this out and put it in a separate topic and I'll bet you get some more data. It sounds like a cool build. I'd be with a 26" barrel you'll get great speeds from it.


All you gotta do is use .338-06 with case capacity adjusted to match your real world fireformed AI cases. The shoulder shape differences won't mean a thing.
 
Working up a white tail load for a 11 year old hunter. He's carrying a Savage 99 20" barrel in a 303 Savage.
