Hey everyone!
I’m trying to get some info from y’all on real world velocities for the .270 Win!
There’s a guy on another site that always likes to argue about real world velocities, instead of book load ones.
He’s always touting his .308 Win with a 24 inch barrel, and comparing 130 gr bullets of the 270, to his beloved .308, and 165 - 168 gr bullets, and the velocities and energy.
Hope to hear from y’all soon!!!

Real world Magnetospeed results from my 270 Win are all I could ask for using RL26, IMR4831, and Staball 6.5. All loads with 130gr bullets and 24” barrel. RL26 gives 3150 fps with E-Tips. Ballistic Tips and Partitions are in the 3140 fps range with IMR4831, and Ballistic Tips with Staball 6.5 gives a velocity of 3130 fps. All very close to one another. All give normal pressure indications. Every firearm is different. The 270 Winchester is a top performer. The 308 Winchester is a great performer as well (I have 2 308’s and love to hunt with them) but won’t match a 270’s velocities with any 165gr bullet without exceeding SAAMI chamber pressure limits.

Comparing 130gr bullets in .308 diameter to 130gr bullets in .277 diameter is comparing apples to oranges though. The latter will have a greater sectional density and ballistic coefficient, which I believe will translate into better on game performance and trajectory.

Friend of mine has a Ruger 77 that refuses to group any 150gr bullet-powder combo we've tried yet it will shoot 125 and 165gr bullets well. He settled on the Nosler 125gr AB and has been satisfied with the results. Shots have been under 300yds so far. Not a 270 Win but still makes the 308 a flatter shooting round. Dan.

For my Kimber Montana in 270 Win I've worked up a good hunting load with the Barnes 130 TTSX that shoots 0.5 MOA at 3050 fps with H4350, and the same with R19. I can get another 100 fps from either load, but the groups open up to 1 MOA.
From a 20" Ruger Ultralight I got velocities up to 2950 with R26 and 150 grain Ballistic Tips. I got distracted by other projects and never finished working up an accurate load before I ran out of time last summer.

Hi Hawk,
I don’t know why your looking for speed when accuracy has always been most important. Guess I’m not understanding what it is your trying to achieve. Try this load it is a tack driver !
150 grain AccuBond Long Range with 50.2 grains of H4350 Regular Primer. My son killed his cow elk at 643 yards. I hope this helps in one way or another. Regardless best of luck in all your avenues of life !

Wow, a 308 that doesn’t like 150’s? That’s, well, just wow. 150 grain bullets are my 308’s bread and butter.
I wasn’t poo pooing the 308 at all. I carry my 308 Win more than any other round lately. It seems to do everything I need. Was just saying that 270’s and 308’s are different animals.

No my 300 win mag I can’t find a good load out to the lands or not with 190 grain AccuBond Long Range bullets. RL 17 isn’t a tack driver reliable powder.
My Son’s 270 with AccuBond Long Range bullets is a very lethal Rifle it’s what turned me on to the AccuBond Long Range but they just don’t perform out of my 300 win mag 😩

Don’t feel bad. They JUST left me sucking my thumb as well.

With 24” barrel it is no problem to get 3150-3200+ With 130s and 2950-3000+ with 150s these days. I just used alliant published load data and got just over 3200 fps with 130 partitions and RL16 in my kimber 84l. I went with 1 gr below max as slightly more accurate and still at 3140 fps. One of the nice things about the 6.5 creedmoor and 6.5 prc craze is lot of the new powder optimized for these are perfect for the old 270.

Yeah, this guy is always cracking my stones about his “real” world velocities with his .308, and 165gr bullets.
I know, for a fact, that my .270 will shoot flatter, hit harder at distances longer than 300 yds than his .308! Hell, I know, because I have a .308!
I have mentioned before that he is pushing max, or above max on his pressure if he’s getting that kinda performance, and one day he’ll have a detonation on his hands.
I thought I remembered some of y’all doing ladder testing with the .270, and 24 inch barrels, and using RL-26 or RL-22 somewhere, but I’m not finding that info now that the forum updated.
I hope to hear more from everyone that has both cartridges soon.

why not build a load that's both , fast and accurate ? why settle for one or the other ?

Hawk , your forum buddy probably has a 308 that out runs the 270 win . he just forgot to tell you it's a 308 Norma . 165's at 3300 + fps

I understand you Joe, no problems. Yeah I know it don't sound right a 308 not liking 150gr but it is what it is. Anyway he hammers deer with the 125 gr. Dan.
