Reloading the .270 Win

Thats all I need is another nosler bullet to develope a load for. So far in the last 5 years I have managed to load every nosler hunting bullet except the ET. The new ABLR may end up the best of the best. Can,t wait to try them. I would say the 140 AB is my current favorite do it all big game bullet. Tommorow I will be shooting a few AB,s BT,s and PT,s all in 140 grainers. I,ll probably launch a few 110 pro hunters as well. Talk about fun to shoot at low cost and low recoil those pro hunters are it for me.

I have thought about those too, will have to see if I can find some. Lots of good reviews at Midway USA for them.

Thank you for the great info! I think that I will start with the 140 grain BT since SPS has seconds right now. I have an excellent supply of RL 22, 4831 sc, etc. Just need to find brass and dies  .

I doubt you will have any trouble coming up with a load with any of those powders.

I am thinking you will hit paydirt pretty quick. What scope are you thinking of putting on it?

I use us one of the oldest, most copied and common loads fo the .270 Win, 130 gr Partition, 55.0 grs of IMR 4350 and a CCI 200 primer in W-W brass. I get about 3060 fps and it has worked for me forever. Dan, I believe uses the same load.

The 130 sierra flat base bullet using cci-200,s ww-brass and IMR-4350 was my first handload I ever used in the .270. I still have the first box marked 1967. Ha, then I got my first chrony in 1983 and started tinkering too much with other loads. Funny how a chrony will sometimes ruin a great load. I also got 3065 with the charge I was using. That was a killer load on mule deer.

Charlie it is hard to teach us old dogs new
tricks  I have now bought some H-4831sc
& a couple of pounds of RL-22 because I can't find
anymore IMR4350:(.
So if I do find some I will have some new powder to experiment
with

Blessings,
Dan

Dan, IMR 4831 SSC will work great in the .270. If I remeber, the 140 grain Partitions shoot great with 58.0 grains of 4831. Approach with caution or course. Let me know how the RL22 shoots in the .270 Win. It should be great for 140 and 150 grain bulllets.

More great info and thank you for the QL info! Thanks guys. I have a set of Redding dies and 100 count of Rem brass on there way.

I am pretty excited to see how you make out with the rifle. Hoping it shoots nearly as good as it looks!

Scott, could you run quick load using IMR-4831 and a 130 PT. I have some load data from dupont dated 1974 that shows a max load of 59 grs. using the 130 core lock. Would be darn interesting to see what quick load would show with the PT.

The 130 grain bullet with 58.0 grains of IMR 4831 was JOC's favorite load, according to his books.

Thanks Dr. Mike. Man that is great info. I,ve shot alot of bullets with 57 grs. All of the 130.s chrony over 3000. Quickload pretty much confirms what I suspected with duponts data. Its hot. 57.5 is where I stop these days. The velocity I get is nearly dead nuts on quickload. Very good info Dr. Mike . Thankyou.

Lessons learned from "abusing" the 270 Win, with 22 inch barrel. 3000fps with the 130s with IMR 4831 will promote long barrel life. Pushing them to 3100fps will provide short term rewards. Used IMR 4831 for 3080fps, accurate yes. Barrel sits in the corner now with old friends. Began loading the .270 before IMR 4831 was on the market, and chrono's were not around to say you were not getting 3200fps either. Times have changed for the good, the data available today is outstanding.

I thought Jack's load was with the milsurp verion of 4831, granted DuPont made the IMR powders back then. Supposedly the milsurp version had slowed down a bit due to age. I could be wrong. Too much ravages bt CRS deisease these days.
Paul B.

Yeah you are right Paul, it was H4831 and was the old WWII 20 mm cannon stuff. I remember buying this powder for about $1.75 a pound for several years for my 7mm Mag. It was great powder though, cheap, consistant, accurate. I used H4831 for years until the supply dried up and Hodgdon started making it themselves.

I then used the Hodgdon H4831 for several years until IMR 7828 came out. IMR 7828 gives me about 100 fps more than I ever could get from either IMR 4350 or H4831 in my 7mm Mag and/or in my .340 Weatherby.

I've never owned a 270 and don't have much experience reloading for one but i have helped a couple friends work up a load for theirs. The best combination that produced the best group for me was the Sierra 130gr Pro Hunter and H4831. If i remember correctly this load shot around 1/2" and the rifle was a Browning Bar which i thought was really good for an auto. This was like 5-6yrs ago and he's still using this load today.
