Have you guys checked out Big Green's new stuff? I like the looks of the new Model 750 in the carbine version in .308 Win. Any have a Remington semiauto rifle? From what I understand, they are of good quality. If so, the Model 750 just might be my next rifle. A Model 750 carbine in .35 Whelen would be an excellent really big critter gun. But I'd rather have a 798 in .338 Win Mag.

The new Model 798 is listed, but damn it, why couldn't it come with a standard walnut stock? I am a traditionalist when it comes to hunting rifles.

If the Rem. 798 begins to sell well, I'm certain that a walnut stock will be offered. At least it appears that Remington is listening to the public. The Mauser action is still the yard stick by which others are judged.
The Rem. 750 continues the reputation of the Rem. 742 and 7400. I had a Rem.742 carbine in 30-06 years ago and foolishly sold it. Looking at the Rem. 750 makes me want one!
Tom, let us know which one you get and how it shoots.

roy,

I would love to have the carbine version in .35 Whelen. But I wouldn't mine having it in .308 Win or the rifle in '06.

I would think that the carbine version in .35 Whelen would work for all North American game, and by that I am including Alaskan coastal griz, provided distance is kept to 250 yards. Put a Leupold 1.5x5 on it and I would be good to go. In fact, I just talked myself into it. Hell, I might not need my Guide Gun anymore. 8)

Take care,

Tom

Tom, I don't see how you can go wrong with the Rem. 750 in 35Whelan. That is another cartridge that never seemed to get the following that it deserves. I cannot think of an animal in N.America that could stand against a well placed round from that one. It would be very easy to carry and handy, even in heavy cover. Walking with the scope set on 1.5x would give you very fast target acquistion for anything that you might jump.
You really have me thinking about that .308Win. The only .308Win that I own is the heavy LEO version of the Savage with that custom stock (can't think of the name off hand) and the new Savage trigger. A lot of fun to use on BIG prairie dogs. But I have not sent my single shot Browning off to have it re-barreled yet. Now, I am thinking of simply having the barrel set back, reamed and the muzzle shortened and I would have a fine second deer rifle in .308Win. The rifle is now in 30-06, but I bought it at a good price, knowing the accuracy was failing due to throat erosion.

There is an article in this issue of Rifle about the new Model 750. If I had been on the fence before, I am off it now in the direction of parting with money. Apparently this is a first-rate autoloader. With a 1.75x6 Leupold atop it, I sould be good to go. Now all I have to wait for is their arrival at sporting goods stores in So Cal. I will be all over a .308 Win carbine.

I know all the rheotroic about semiauots, but there is something compelling me to buy one. Could it be that my dad used to hunt with a Model 81 Woodsmaster??? [/i]

Tom,

Roy is right on with the 35 Whelen. If you take a close look at the ballistics, the 35 Whelen lags about 100 yds behind the 338 Win Mag!
I have a M700 Classic in 35 Whelen, have taken 17 WT deer and a 250 lb Black Bear. I only had to trail 2-3 deer but the blood trails were short and very heavy. For bigger game like Elk and Moose, its a 300 yd thumper.
Accuracy is excellent too. With A VXIII 2.5x8 scope, mine shoots well under an inch. I have a target with 4 shots in a single hole. I didn't fire the 5th because I didn't want to "screw up the group".
I also shot a 2.5" group at 300 yds off the seat of a 3 wheeler up at camp.

The 308 Win in a carbine wuld be lighting quick too. Pleant of power and accuracy for most anything you would want to hunt in N.A.

I think you should get both.

JD338,

My wife would not like my hanging out with you. As for me, I find no flaws with your logic! I think I should buy two, too!

I agree that the .35 Whelen is an excellent cartridge for ALL North American game!

Tom,

My wife spends more on cloths and shoes than I do on guns!
She also reminds me of our vows, "Whats yours is mine and whats mine is mine".
Hard to argue with that kind of logic.

I still think you need both the 308 and the 35.

Regards,
