RL 33 Tested

I tested RL 33 in the 338 RUM with the 300 gr AB with disappointing results.

94.5 grs produced an average MV of 2542 fps, ES 74 and SD 26. Second group went .805".

By comparison, my Retumbo load with 91.5 grs produced and Average MV of 2666 fps, ES 14 and SD 8. Group went .567".

I will try going up and see what happens.

It's really slow Jim. You might not get enough in the case to get decent velocity. I'd suspect it would be better in the .300 RUM or .30-378 with heavy bullet.

My buddy at the farm shoots a 30-378 Wby. RL 33 should be ideal.

Retumbo just works well in the 338 RUM. Think I am going to stay with it.
Single digit SD's is tough to beat.

Were it my rifle, I'd be inclined to test it in one grain increments. You're talking essentially one percent, which though potentially capable of stressing the brass should not be detrimental to the action. I'd be looking for 2700 fps. When I saw that, I'd be ready to stop.

Fwiw over at 24hr a guy ran some 230 hybrids in a 300 rum and it actually ran faster than ql thought. He ran up to a ql estimated 74k pressure without visual pressure...but then I think lot of people get up there loading the rum...
Maybe it has some pressure reducing magic like re17 in certain cases....who knows?

RUM cases are notorious for not showing pressure until your way over pressure.

As in the early days of the rum....reports of 180s at 3450-3500 fps abounded!?
Still some of these newer powders are doing some interesting things. And...some seem a bit unpredictable either for good or bad as you go from lighter to super hvy target/long rangers. Add to that all the long throated guns and we shooter/testers are kind of on our own.
One thing about my 30/378 is that soft Norma brass usually talks to you as you get naughty with it!

I had one .300 RUM up to 3650fps with 180BT's before I got ejector marks and then the cases were done. They wouldn't hold a primer.
