Ruger All American

It may be Ruger making an attempt at lowering of the barrier to entry for many young families that can not afford to spend $900 for a Model 70 and put another $600 for a Leupold scope and hardware on it before they can go shooting or hunting. I guess the more the merrier and I hope that they are at least capable hunting rifles. Maybe it will attract new, youger folks into the hobby of shooting and hunting. We could use another million votes to stop the Liberal machine from stripping our rights.

We are well represented on this forum with members of the military and veterans who may have also been hunters when they were young. Most of the people that I meet on these forums are under 35 and many (most?) have never served their country. I grew up in the draft era and was drafted when I was 19 years old. I joined to pick school and spent 3 years on active duty.

Most young men who had any pull during that era, joined the National Guard instead and served 6 months. They also did not rotate any Guard unit overseas then so most reservists did nothing much for 4 months but train after basic. Anyhow if this hobby is going to be with us in the future, somebody must figure out how to grow it with young people.

My two daughters will not have anything to do with guns. They were brainwashed by their liberal teachers and peers while in school to hate guns and I could not change that one iota, especially now that they know everything there is to know, after all, they went to college! In fact, I did not even know what was happening until it was too late. That is what we are up against: a school system hell bent on taking away private ownership of small arms. Don't believe me ask your kids. My daughters will make sure that their kids feel the same way. Even my 7 year old grandson is starting to tell his dad that he hates guns, despite the fact that my son shoots and hunts every year. That to me is scary!

That is a valuable perspective OldTrader. We need as many firearms in the hands of responsible Americans as possible. If Ruger can build a lower priced rifle that accomplishes that goal, I hope they sell a bunch. I own a few Rugers, so I hope they don't discontinue the Hawkeye/M77/No. 1 rifles because this one sells so well.

Every economy priced and assembled weapon that I have ever purchased has not been well enough made to make it. The only economically designed guns that I have personally seen make the "cut" are the old Savage 110 series, the Remington 721/722's, and the Winchester 670's. I think it remains to be seen for this new All-American...but the Remington 710 and 770's, the Mossberg 4x4, the Savage 10, the H+R single shot rifles, etc....have been garbage. They look cheap, they feel cheap, and they are less than average in their performance. No offense meant to those who have these guns and are pleased by their performance. But I agree with 35 Whelen in that you get what you pay for in guns and my experience has never proven otherwise. Heaven forbid we had to only own 3 guns but if so, I for one would make damn sure that if I had to have only one, that it would be the best I could buy in all ways. And I am also very disappointed in the cheap guns which adorn the shelves of so many gun stores. Because so many I know that buy these are nearly always a first time buyer and it wouldve been their one gun. Save up and get something good I always say. Don't buy junk, buy quality and keep America running.

I'm not a huge fan of the junk class either, such as the Rem 710-770 or the Mossberg 4x4, or the Savage Axis.
However I have a Marlin XL7C in 25-06 and really like it, and could see myself in a TC Venture.
The Ruger could be in this bracket. Some of these rifles can shoot better than much more expensive ones. Tupperware stocks seems to be the common theme, it's what keeps the cost down. But then look at all the 700s, M70s, and M77s with plastic.

This rifle actually has a couple of features that make it a step above the "cheapo" rifle its being compared to. It has aluminum bedding inserts in that ugly stock and it has a three lug bolt that opens quickly. The bolt is very similar to Kleingunter K-14s and 15s. Plus the barrel set up Fotis described. We'll just have to see how they shake out in the field and on the range.

I still would opt for this

Hard to beat those Marlin's for the money, at least so far.. They seem to be shooting pretty well from most I have heard of..

Savage Scott
Pillar bedded, free floated, change barrel and a 5 minute trigger job (for me)

Don't forget that you can pick up a Weatherby Vanguard for around $350-400, NIB, if you do some shopping. You can get an entry level scope for another $100-150, depending on your budget, and you're set. With the reintroduction of the Legend series by Bushnell coming, it appears the best bargains in scopes are becoming more available - that being the Bushnell with rainguard, Burris FullField variants, Nikon Buckmaster, Vortex, and Redfield. It's getting easier to get into shooting a rifle, but it's always going to be about a week's pay or more as a price of entry. Even with the sub-$300 rifles available like the Marlin and Savage.

Not to take this OT but Nikita Kruschev once said, "There are more communists teaching in America's schools than in ll of Mother Russia." Based on what Old Trader said, meihinks Nicky Boy wasn't lying. :x
I dunno much about the new Ruge American but when I compare it to their past products, it sure is butt ugly.
I have a Winchester M70 Stainless Classic in .338 Win. Mag. that came with a Tupperware stock. That rifle is so inaccurate that I feel guilty as hell when I place it on my table at a gun show. It is that bad. Just goes to show you that even the pricier rifles may not shoot worth a damn.

Paul, it is scarier than that even. In Washington State during the last Presidential Election, Hilary Clinton won the primary election in Washington State by a significant percentage of the vote. The state Democratic Convention met (of which I used to be a member, years ago) and decided that they knew better what was good for the state of Washington and they through out the primary vote and unanimously gave all delegates to Obama. This is totally against the public will and vote.

When I was a member of that convention, it was overwhelmingly populated by humorless female school teachers with little brown hair buns, little skwinchy glasses, who drove VW Jettas and walked around spouting little commie mantras as though they are the truth. In fact I was married to one of those once but not any more!

If you consider that the Democratic Party managed to disqualify the primary votes in Florida, Ohio plus two other states because of silly little nitpicking rules about what time that the votes were filed with the national party, and the fact that ACORN totally corrupted the vote in Mississppi and a couple other small states. Obama would have lost the first vote of the electing Democratic Convention. Not that Hilary is much better but at least she tells the truth once in a while and she is American.

I have the spendy good looking guns in my safe and love them, but this new Ruger is 6 lb 3 oz, a rotary magazine that doesn't stick out the bottom, a 70 degree bolt lift and shoots great! The new bedding in this beats the crap out of the old 77 angled screw system with the barrel being pushed on by the stock. Maybe Ruger will refine this a bit and make it better? I would not have given these a second look if I hadn't shot the Tikka T3 Lite, it handles like a toy and shoots great. I like to be able to pack around a light gun as I get older as long as it shoots under an inch which this new Ruger does.

I agree. I picked one up at Cabela's the other day and was not impressed at all. Reminds me of the 710/770. It will be very long before my battery includes 2 700s 2 77s and a Pre-64. I'm at the point where I'd rather find something for a donor and customize it than buy a factory rifle. You can do this and get exactly what you want for a little more than a factory but less than a custom rifle shop/high end factory.
