Anyone have any experience with them? I was thinking about picking one up and building a rifle off it. Here's what I have tentatively planned at the moment....

Savage dual port target action: $531
Shilen SS match barrel, prechambered and threaded in 6.5x47L: $374
Manners T5A stock: $713
IdahoCTD 4 port muzzle brake: $45

Total comes to $1663 before optics. Not too bad. Was going to just rebarrel my 22-250 to this caliber, but decided I wanted to keep that caliber, and after adding in the cost of truing the rem 700 action, and the cost of the barrel blank and chambering costs it wasn't going to be much cheaper.

Anyway, let me know what you think, and if you have any experience with this action.

Thanks,

Tim

That's about what I had in my 280AI I think with an 700 ADL donor. Couldn't tell you anything about a savage.

I really like my 280AI that i built on a savage 110 action. It shoots really well. I would imagine that the target action would just be better. I'll build another rifle on a savage action again someday for sure.

Sounds like you got a solid plan. May I ask why a 6.5x47?

Fills a gap in my current selection of rifles, don't have a 6.5 yet. Every report I've ever heard on the 6.5x47 is that it is an inherently accurate cartridge. It will double nicely as a hunting rifle for deer sized and below game as well as a fairly cheap target round to reload for out to 1k yards. I can't afford to shoot my 338 Lapua as much as I would like/need to practice for long range shooting. And for whatever reason I have had a strange fascination for it from the first time I saw this round....can't explain it, just have a deep down desire to own one!

i watched the savage target action win a high master f class match last weekend in 6xbr at 600 yards, second place also used one, first shot a 594 24x and second shot a 592 20x. so i think its safe to say they work rather well. those were some of the highest scores shot on that range ever. i had a shilen 6.5x47lapua barrel on my savage loaner rifle and it shot extremely well also.

Nice! Thanks for the report. I think I'm almost ready to pull the trigger on starting to order parts. Just waiting for a guy that I've ordered stuff from in the past to check on what kind of a price he can order one for. I've been scouring the internet reading about it and most everything I've found has been very positive about them. Those are some impressive scores that were shot for sure! Were they the dual port models or single port?
