Do you guys know of any place that a guy can send a hunck of wood and have a stock machined out of it. I have a massive black walnut tree in my yard and the wife says it has to go. Was thinking about maybe having a stock or two carved out of it. Is black walnut a good wood to use for a stock?

You could check with Boyd's. I'm not sure if you can send them a blank or not, but they would do a fine job if they are willing to accept yours.

You could also check with Joel Russo. Just do a search. He's set up with CNC programs for various actions. Also, you could check with Richards...they make a "micro fit" stock and may be able to work with you.

Jmad,

I got Russo's contact info if interested. He's a phone kinda guy as he gets overwhelmed with emails.

I had a stock built by him, topshelf kinda guy..

Let me know.

Once you cut the tree down and get 2-3 blocks cut big enough to choose anice grain from it would take a minimum of 10 yrs in a very low humidity enviroment to dry down properly, some of the top stock makers will not use blanks aged less than 15 yrs. So unless your a very patient man or have a child that would appreciate a stock cut from your own back yard, it'll be a while. Now I beleive that good walnut for stocks is in fairly high demand you may be able to trade 3-4 good sized blocks for a cured blank with one of the custom stock guy's . Just an idea on some options.

I got ahold of Joel Russo...Very nice guy. Told me that it would take over five years or kiln dring to get that tree usable. He also told me that if there was no sentamental value to the three that I would be better off just buying some wood.

Thanks for the replies. I'm saving all the contact info incase I ever want to put some nicer wood on my 280 AI or 375 R.

Sounds good. Joel is a great guy to deal with.

American black walnut can make a terrific stock!

A friend of mine is looking at buying a stock from him. He's emailed me some pics of his stocks very nice.

The guy has some very nice pieces of wood that is for sure! I would be afraid to hunt with some of them!
