Met one of my students and her boyfriend at the range this afternoon. I'd coached her on pistol shooting a couple of years ago. She's decided hunting sounds like a good thing to her, and it was time to get to know the rifle. Wonderful sunny afternoon! We all enjoyed:

First up were prone, sitting and standing positions, with my Marlin 39A and a box of .22 shorts. Yes, shorts!
Just like when I was a kid. She did real well, and decided that she really likes lever action rifles.

After shooting up most of my .22 shorts, we moved on to the .30-30 Glenfield, with the little 2.5x Leupold. She did real well with that, and despite me firing a demo shot first, and explaining that the .30-30 is a LOT different from a .22 cartridge... She was a little surprised at the blast. Not hurt, just surprised. She liked that rifle though. I'm thinking she's going to end up with a lever action of some sort, perhaps a .38/.357 Marlin? Who knows...
I showed her the .30-06 Rem 700. She loaded & unloaded it and got into shooting position with it, but declined to shoot it after seeing me shoot one round. A little intense for her today. Perhaps some other day. In the meantime, she knows a LOT more about handling a rifle now. Safely, and with reasonable accuracy for a beginner.
Take a new shooter out to the range and introduce 'em to shooting. Gently. I couldn't have had a much better afternoon.
Regards, Guy
