The hot 6.5's

Not only have I gotten old and not able to keep up anymore but my favorite 6.5 ( swede) has also gotten old and is out of favor. Damn I hate old age! I am going to request that my 6.5 Swede gets buried with me so that it will know somebody still loves her lol

It’s not out of favor. Still a great one. Today’s powders have only made it better. Mines a sleeper. Just need to use it a bit more.

Well I wasn’t too far off!

Bottom line is the 264, 26 Nos and 6.5 Wby are pretty much animals when given a solid dose of today’s excellent powders.

Mines headed out tomorrow with Retumbo. Hoping it shows some promise. May even sneak it into truck. I don’t imagine a poor old cow would like it much.

The 6.5-06, 6.5-284 are slick but they don’t have the lungs to keep up with the big guys. Different class of rifle. Almost as good as a 270 Winchester though

I have been wondering what Quick Load would say .264 Win Mag Nosler Brass, Nosler 130gr AB and 140gr Nosler AB would do in a 24 inch barrel with Reloader 26.
Especially since Reloader 26 seems to be giving people some impressive velocities in other cartridges.

Code:
Cartridge : .264 Win. Mag.
Bullet : .264, 130, Nosler AccuBond 56902
Useable Case Capaci: 75.520 grain H2O = 4.903 cm³
Cartridge O.A.L. L6: 3.340 inch = 84.84 mm
Barrel Length : 24.0 inch = 609.6 mm
Powder : Alliant Reloder-26

6.5-300 WBY., 140g acc at 3400fps, it is still going 2550fps at 500 yards and 1825 at 1000 yards and no problem finding brass.

The max loads in a 6.5-300wm run around 75-77grs of R-33/N-570/etc to get around 3300fps. The 26 Nosler and 6.5-300 Weatherby run about 10grs more powder to get 50-100fps faster. Serious land of diminishing returns. 300win mag brass is cheap and just about always available. It's a pretty easy wildcat to run and all of mine have been pretty accurate. I shot a deer at 1006yds with one of them.

Just wondering which one would have the best barrel life.. I have heard the after 5-600 rds the Weatherby will need to be set back..
No one mentioned the 6.5PRC.. Looks interesting..
I have always wanted a 6.5x55 in a modern action loaded to modern pressures with todays new powders.. I guess I am a little old fashioned.
Take care
Ed

Thanks DrMike and it looks like I will be powder shopping.

IdahoCTD a Deer at a 1000 plus that's impressive.

When the 26 Nosler came out I felt like it might be a little to overboard but it is a nice looking cartridge. If I like the Rifle Guy I'd go for it.

Shooting the barrel out of a hunting rifle isn't going to happen if it is used just for hunting. I could not shoot the barrel out of my 6.5-300 if I lived another 50 years also they do make more barrels.

I didn't think I shot my hunting rifles much but I must shoot them a lot more then others on here. I usually shoot them 150-200 rounds the first year and then 50-100 rounds per year after that. There is no point in a hot rod if your not going to shoot it long IMO. Shooting it long requires practice. At that point I would probably burn a barrel up in 5-6 years or less with a 6.5-300 Weathery or 26 Nosler. While that isn't terrible it's not very long either. I know people have burned up 7RUM's in under 400 rounds and I bet the 26 Nosler and 6.5-300 Weatherby are the same if you don't play nice with them.

For what it’s worth Guy for Deer & Antelope I don’t see where you would gain a lot over your 25-06 and you have your 30-06 for the big stuff.

Shhh! I know...

But it's kinda fun to mess around with a different cartridge, and I think one of the hot 6.5's would be interesting and useful.

I like Nathan’s choice. Sounds cool. (y)
Guy I’d base it on what bullet (s) you’d probably use and how fast you’d like them to go. There’s a ton of terrific 6.5 cartridges out there. Obviously barrel length will make a difference. But w a 24-26” barrel;
You want 130-140s in 2600-2800 and change- 6.5-47, Creed, 6.5-55, even the old 6.5-54 at the lower end
2850-3100- 6.5 PRC, 6.5 GAP, improved 6.5-55s, 6.5-284, 6.5-06
3100+- 264 WM, 26 Nosler, 6.5-300 Weatherby, 6.5x68

I’m certain I missed quite a few.
Also didn’t go into too much on the wildcat side either.
Good luck! Sounds like a fun adventure.

I would really love to have one of the big 6.5’s. I’ve had almost all the little ones lol. Honestly though I couldn’t sacrifice the barrel life. Even if I bought it to just hunt with I couldn’t keep myself from taking it out every weekend and playing lol. I put almost 1200 rounds through my 6.5 CM just last summer, so that would already be a barrel there in the big 6.5 weatherby haha. Still that weatherby keeps calling me. Just hot nasty speed and I can’t fight the urge much longer [emoji16]

I know that’s the one I keep eyeballing lol! I keep trying to tell myself that 90% of my Deer are inside 100 yards, and that I don’t need it. But my other self keeps saying it’ll be ok just go get it haha

Cleveland: If you can afford it go for it, life would be boring if we only bought what we needed. I like fast guns and fast cars that's why I bought a 6.5-300 WBY. and a Challenger Hellcat even though a guy in his 70's probably doesn't need 700 HP but I wanted it and it sure was fun.
