With spring coming lets talk turkey guns.

#1 Rem 870 Super Mag with 26" barrel shooting 3.5" Hevi #7 with a SumToy choke. I have a Mueller reflex on it zeroed at 40 yards.

#2 Rem 870 Mag with 28" barrel shooting 3" Hevi #6 with a SumToy choke. I have TruGlo sights on the rib.

I also have a 870 28 ga that I plan on having in the blind when I set up on fields over decoys. If I can get one in to the decoys I hope to grab that and see if I can hammer one at about 15-20 yards.

I would like to shoot a bird with every gauge and with a recurve, longbow, and compound. This spring, I should have 2 or 3 tags to fill plus I plan on calling for 3 others. I hope to pile up the feathers.

I just have a plain 870 with an extra full choke. What season and zone did you draw? I have first season in zone 1. You are more than welcome to come call fore me too...

I have zone 4 3rd season and hope to buy a 4th and 5th. Dad has the 2nd and my father in law has the 1st but he hunts near Green Lake. I also do the learn to hunt on Easter weekend. Where do you hunt in zone 1? If the father in law thing doesnt work out I could maybe work something out to call for you. I use to use the extra full with Fed Flight Control wads but after some reading on the Hevi shot, I gave it a try and am sold. You can shoot a smaller shot size so you get more pellets down range.

I live near Blair in Trempealeau county. I haven't hunted turkeys since we moved here in '06. My soon to be 6 year old son has been asking me to take him turkey hunting so I put in for a tag. We have been seeing quite a few in the corn fields out the back door.

Well if you are able to watch them out your door, keep an eye on them and if they come to the same spot every morning, you need to be there. During the 1st week they will have hens with them so you need to be where they want to be. If you don't get one right away, take a breakfast break and hit the woods later in the morning. They may be alone and ready for love.

You need a BP 10 ga fowler or a .75 cal Brown bess Smoothbore loaded with hand dropped shot and wasp nest wadding. That's how they did it Waaaay back in the day! :)

From my experience, I will never go back to lead shot for turkey hunting. As far as shell selection goes, I have seen better patterns from a 2 3/4" to 3" shell. As far as shot size, both are adequate to 45 yards.
Keith
P.S. good luck on your goal!

Remington 11-87 Super Mag, Red Dot scope and a Pure Gold .670" turkey choke.

Remington 870 turkey gun with a 21' barrel synthetic stock and a Mossberg 835 turkey gun with a mad max turkey tube Winchester 3 1/2 2 1/4 oz of #6 shot.

It's been a long time since I've gone for turkey. My son and I might need to give it a try this spring. Have several 12 gauge shotguns on hand, a couple with tight chokes. Beretta, Ithaca, Remington. Those ought to work.

Everyone of those loads will work but for me it would be hard to not load the Hevi Shot. Just shoot them before they are too close and you miss :)

WOW.. You almost have me jazzed up to start shooting my turkey gun a little.

Heath, would you wanna write up how you polished your bore. I wanna try it on my 11-87 this year.

Scotty, I made me a chamber guide, a 20 gauge inside a 12 with the primer punched:

Then I followed these directions: http://oldgobbler.com/Forum/index.php/topic,182.0.html

My barrel was ROUGH, I mean bad rough and doing the above did not get it really slick like I wanted after a few times of doing it. I went to the local hardware store and picked up some drywall sandpaper. I got home and cut a piece to fit, Kroiled the snot of out my barrel, the jig, the paper and went to work. The dry wall paper is bad news bears and it ate out the spots that the other stuff would not touch. After I was happy with the results there I went back and worked my way back down from red scotch brite/JB compound to green scotch brite/JB compound to a rag covered in JB and then finished with a rag and Mother's Polish. My hit counts went up, my pattern became more even and it will honestly shoot anything, 4's, 5's, 6's, 7's and 3's and 3.5's.

I only did the drywall paper because it was not shooting that well because of the roughness of the barrel, I wish I had pictures before/after. I figured I had nothing to loose and if I jacked it up I would just buy a new barrel.

I do run the Hevi 7's the most. They are wicked bad, I killed one last year over 50 with them and it looked like it was kicked in the face by a mule when it got hit. I use the lead after the foliage is full and visibility limits shot to usually under 30yds.
