ultimate long range coyote rifle?

Damn.... it was just a question.

How is anything in my post insulting to anyone? Chill out out 'trader....

Charlie, I thought you were going to put him on ignore. You may have forgot to do so, but I think it would be better for your health to do just that.

For the record I have shot well over 100 coyotes throughout my life time before we moved from El Paso to Alaska, but that does not make me smarter or more knowledgeable than members like Scotty, Dr Mike, Fotis, Jim, Ridge_Runner or many others when it comes to things like wind drift, accuracy and terminal performance.

I have used and seen used many different calibers when shooting a coyote. Usually whatever was in the rear window of the truck we were in. But I dont remember anyone ever telling someone that the answer to shooting a coyote does not start with a .25

I saw it as somewhat offensive, we don't have the huntable populations of yotes that you have here, but I have killed more than 1/2 dozen deer at beyond 1000 yards, you were insinuating that anyone who didn't kill a lot of coyotes didn't know about long range shooting. my guess is side by side can hold my own in hitting targets beyond 750 yards

I've killed a fair number of coyotes and foxes. Mostly within 100 yards with a 22-250, 12 gauge and 22 magnum. I've got nowhere near the western experience of killing a bunch of dogs. Folks use what they can or feel comfortable. What's good for one guy isn't necessarily good for another.

I agree! One should use what fits them best, not what somebody says is the best.

You would think Songdog would have learned his lesson on how to act on this forum after being banned once already. He whined and begged and got back on here just to stir up problems again. Seems like his usual MO on Campfire. Go back to 24hourcampfire where you belong! Maybe you can impress someone on that site with your supposed "skill set"

Whined and begged .... that's hilarious. I don't remember you being there at the Flying J in Cheyenne when Fotis and I had a laughable conversation.

I don't see why everyone gets all butt hurt when quantifiable data makes their favorite cartridge look slighted. I'm not trying piss off trader, or anyone else. Just stating ballistic facts.... sorry if they hurt your ballistic feelings.

I asked because I was curios... and I'm interested in how big people 'think' a coyote is. I wasn't challenging credentials.... rather I acknowledging those who I've seen put fur in the dirt on this forum.

Everybody needs to lighten up....

I agree, everyone just move on please. Both Charlie and Song Dog have a lot to offer the forum.

For what it is worth, I have been hunting since I was 10 years old. Started in Maine with wharf rats at night and a .22 LR in 1953. I still kill rats, every week under my shed at 20 yards, offhand through the right eye, with a .22 or .22 Mag. Coyotes, I have killed running to 400 yards in California, Wyoming and Utah. However, it is like deer, I quit counting how many deer, or coyotes, I have killed. With deer, I stopped at 50 deer, 40 years ago. I have killed probably another 50 deer since then, but so what!

Song dog we try on this forum to foster a climate of inclusiveness which includes kids and woman on this site and you are a big issue. You have already run off one of our female members who is worth 100 of you and I want you polite or gone!

I was a Plant Manager of 2000 people in Utah for years. I have had a gun and several knives pulled on me, plus being jumped from behind several times by scum, wise guys just like you! I fired them and would fire you if I still had the privilege so either calm down and act human or get lost!

I like you Charlie and appreciate your presence here but please just let it go.

Yup.... No hypocrisy or intolerance there. I'm calm.... always have been... how many capital lettered words or exclamation points do you see in my thread? Who did I call a name?

What did I ever do to you trader? Seriously.... I wanna know. I'm being called out for some kind of rude act..... yet it's ok to call me every name under the sun.... accuse me of being a liar and thief.... liken me to violent criminals... and do it the name of 'forum decency'. Classy... you don't even know me.

I'm sorry if you don't like the way I present experience, empirical evidence, or basic ballistic facts.... I can be curt with my tone, and quick with a sharp wit... both curses. I meant to slight no one... and don't believe I came anywhere near insulting/attacking anyone personally. Look what I wrote...

You are singling out people who because of sex, calibers or shooting preferences, or whatever other personal choice, like caliber, you want to make an issue of for ridicule by yourself of others.

Nobody appointed you as arbiter of taste or personal life choices? That having been said, where do you get off making fun of people who are not bothering other people? You come on this site with a giant chip on your shoulder, a big mouth and proceed making enemies and driving off perfectly nice other people who have done nothing to you.

The world today is full of jerks like yourself who arbiter the way every one else's chooses or decides and then you create general discord and hard feelings where there should be none. Have I ever ridiculed your guns or your caliber choices? No but you, Mister Know-it-all, think you have the right to treat others to your crap! Go away or learn to get along with people!

Those light fast bullets would be great out to 600 or so but the wind does blow a good bit out here and they just dont have the BC

The 123 amax would be nice if it had around. .55 BC.

Thinking about a 7mm still and shooting 150/168 ABLR or 162 amax. If you get those up at 31-3200 there as good or better ballistically then 105 @3300 or 140@3100.

If I went with 6.5 or even 7 I do have a 4 port brake sitting here that could be put to use. 1 rifle for everything from coyotes to elk and steel....

As Jim ( jd338 ) has already stated the parameters have changed a bit since the thread was started and with these new parameters how big a coyote is, is irrelevant. I mentioned earlier that I had the opportunity of shooting over 100 coyotes because of where I lived most of my life. Even two or three coyotes a month over a period of thirty years will add up to a lot of coyotes and there were months with more than two or three. In thinking back, I believe a lot of them were taken with a 25-06, 257 Roberts, 308, 30-06. Most rifles used started at .25 and went up from there. When we saw a coyote, we didnt spend a lot of time worrying about what caliber of rifle we were using or whether it fit somebody's ballistic criteria for coyote hunting.

I think the op has now made his decision and I wish him well with the caliber he has chosen

Terrain has a lot to do with it yes.

I have decided to go with a 7mm-300 win mag with a 28" Bartlein shooting 162 amaxs at 3300.

Figure it will give me some good practice with the rifle for big game and ballistically its pretty tough to beat.

Thanks for everyone's input.

interesting to see and read what everyone else's idea of what the ultimate coyote rifle would be.

Rifle will weigh about 13-13.5 lbs all done up with the Mcmillan A5 and heavy 28" barrel.

Will have a 4 port brake as well so recoil should be next to nothing really.

Cant wait!!!

Hope to have it done here in couple weeks. I think were just waiting on the PTG oversize recoil lug.

Still wont be able to shoot it for while other then the test targets as I still need to save more money for Nightforce 20 MOA base and rings, plus bullets, powder, and dies.

Ill post up some pics here soon of the components and full specs on another thread.

So a 7mm practical? Cool

PS Good luck finding the A-maxes bro!

Yah I guess thats what you would call it. I still just say its a 7mm-300 mag lol.

I have a good lead on 500 of the amax's and few LBs of H1000 to get me started. Just need to get the money saved up for last few things.

Took me a while to locate some brass but I do have 50 Nosler and 50 winchester to work with.

I also need a Redding FL bushing 300 win mag die and a hornady 7mm STW seater die. Along with my NF base/rings lol.

Only another $700 away or so...
