My dad wants to get a new rifle in January. He has narrowed it down to the Vanguard S2 and Remington 700 SPS in 7mm-08. The rifle will be for whitetail in NC and VA for shots under 250 yards. He will leave the rifle in a totally stock from. Which do yo think will be the better out of box rifle? Which is more accurate and which has a better trigger? Thanks a bunch.

Vanguard. Definitely.

Same here - as if you and I would say differently?

Seriously, with all of the questionable quality stories from Remington I think it's a no-brainer.

Stay away from remington...... WBY all the way

I was leading him towards the Weatherby. How is the Vanguard trigger?

...the new S2 trigger is a "two-stage" that might take a little getting used to, but very nice...

What Gene and the rest said! The Vanguard is a very nicely built rifle that is guaranteed to shoot well..

Buy the Vanguard and you'll never need to look back wondering if you made the right choice. Hey, I think I see a pattern developing here.

Weatherby, unless he needs something light... The are a little porky.

...need "light" kick it up to a Tikka T3. Skip having to remanufacture the Remington...

I agree with the others, go with the Wby.

Well its a landslide for the Vanguard.

Weight is not an issue. The rifle the Vanguard is replacing is a old M77 Ruger that is heavier then the Vanguard so that's not a problem. He is really looking for a better trigger and better shooting rifle all around.

Buy the Vanguard. If the trigger is not good, buy a Timney to replace it. Even then, you're still not much over the price of the SPS, and you have an order of magnitude better rifle.

I own 2 vanguards great rifle for the money, triggers were crap ( not S2's) so timmneys installed. For a plain Jane hunting rig very hard to beat. Accurate and reliable! The only advantage the spa may have is a detachable mag , other then That its definitely advantage vangard .
When you really sit back and think how far Remington's quality control, and just quality has slipped in the last few years , ya gotta give your head a shake. Who would ever believe that a japenese rifle could be made with decent quality and reliability . Should be a wake up call for the big green. That being said I have no problems taken my Vangards a field.

Well I just bought the Rem 700 SPS Tactical(see my previous rant). I don't like the XMark Pro trigger or the stock and I wish it had a mag cuz its a pain to load from the top. But yesterday I was shooting sub 1/2" groups consistantly with it. So at least for now it'll do.

Do the Vanguards still come in MOA and regular?

All the S2 have a 1 moa garuntee with premium ammo. The next step up is now called Range Certified( the ol sub moa) which has a better stock and is pillar bedded ( B&C stock) . They have upgrade the triggers also but I have not heard if its much of an upgrade.

I picked up a S2 last year and I like it. I shot some old loads to break it in and see how it did. It shot well with loads for another gun. Trigger was not bad either. It was my first non remington.
I picked up a SPS Tactical a couple of years ago and it shot very well. Eventually, I did work it up but it was supposed to be a beater. The S2 is that now. As stated on the other thread, quality is hit or miss anymore with remington. For the money, the S2 is hard to beat.

Is there a Howa rifle model that looks like a Vanguard ? Stocks don't look like the Vanguards, though.
