What do you think about this hunt?

All,
I just finished guiding a 4 day hunt on a high fenced property. 2 of the hunters did not hunt that well, and left after the first day of hunting because they did not see enough game. THe other two hunted quite well, and one took a nice trophy Axis, but the other still did not get his axis. He did take a good blackbuck.

When I explained that this was a hunt and not a shoot before they came, all 4 hunters told me that they did not want an easy hunt, but 2 of them clearly did. When I told them that this was a hunt after their first day, their true colors showed and they went home.

This very short story to highlight that some people just want to shoot and even high fenced places can be challenging. The two hunters that stayed not only enjoyed their hunting, but they are coming back with their friends. Guess that you cannot please every one.

Well, I'll take a guide when I'm hunting an area I'm unfamiliar with. Hard to gain detailed knowledge of a place 1000+ miles from home... But I'm not real fond of the whole idea of high fenced enclosures.

Researching the "Sanctuary" a bit mellowed my thoughts towards high fence operations some I'll admit. From their accomplishments, I can see how a high quality high-fence operation can produce some amazing whitetail.

Regarding the four hunters in question, it's pretty obvious, at least from what we've been told, that two were not hunters at all, and two were pretty decent guys, willing to work for their trophy.

I'd have to agree with Guy on the point about the four individuals in question. There is a difference between a hunter, and some boob in the woods with a gun.

As far as high fence operations go, I am not inclined to like them, nor would I ever participate in a high fenced hunt. I take my fair chase seriously, and believe the game I pursue should have every natural opportunity to evade me. For the record, they are pretty darn good at it, too!

Hi all,
Appreciate your comments. For the record, the ranch that I guided on can be very difficult to hunt. My thoughts were that 2 of the guys were not hunters, but the other two understood the difference betwen hunting and shooting.

Since I asked for your feedback, I am not going to comment on the fair chase beyond saying that SCI recognizes this ranch as fair chase, but B+C does not.

thanks again,
Hardpan

I understand your point of view, Hardpan, I just am a little to one side of you one the issue. Doesn't mean we have to be hateful to one another (which we haven't, I don't believe), nor does it mean I don't respect you. Just means we see things a shade differently, which doesn't bother me. I hope it doesn't bother you, either. If you and I totally agree across the board, one of us is redundant.

to me, high fence ranch is not hunting. it is exactly the same as buying a beef cow from a rancher and chasing cows around till you find the one with the correct ear tag. you do HUNTERS a dis-service by calling it hunting. guided harvesting of captive game animals is not hunting. it is just marketing.

I think anyone that hunts on a high fenced ranch is a pansy...

If you cant hunt and shoot animals the right way, then your rich butt dont even need to be out there, because you and I both know if you didn't have the money, you woudlnt be shooting anything...

Of course thats just my opinion on the so called "hunters."

High fence, food plots, driving around til a person sees something to shoot at then jumping out of the truck to take the shot, taking the 500 yd shot instead of getting closer or taking no shot . . . easy to make easy rules for ourselves and hard rules for others.

I am not agreeing or disagreeing . . . but it can be real easy to scoff at someone elses methods and yet justify our own. Hypocrites abound in hunting.

That kind of hunting is for people who have more money than brains if your going to hunt you don't need to be in a high fenced ranch, step up and be a man.
