Alliant claims their lot to lot powder consistency is within 10 percent????. What sort of pressure signs are you seeing? Might have to turn it up a bit if pressure is good to get the velocity you are looking for.
Well the 2012 hunting aps are due in early April; with two Granddaughters, my Daughter, me Son, the Wife, and my Dad to take hunting, I think I will be out there all four seasons and a late season.
Oh darn. CW
If your building an elk only rifle then the 300win mag is the starting point and a 338 RUM is the king.
My son shoots 80.5 grains of H1000 behind a 180 AB and consistently gets sub half inch groups and 3210 FPS out of his 300wm. An '06 will do all you need to do, but if it's an elk only rifle, a...
Amen!
Barnes does not appear to transfer hydrostatic shock like a BT, Although they are very accurate (my family has harvested several deer and a dozen elk with them). Berger bullets and Barnes work as advertised Barnes hold together and shoot straight, Berger.... a small gernade and very...
I think the "Best of the west" folks are shooting 180gr 7mm Berger bullets with a BC around .650. They are considered the experts in long range shooting these days.
Copy that JD, I have moved it back from the lands in .002 increments to .04 off the lands. 73.6 grains and .018 off the lands work the best so far, 3/4" group but looking for a little better. CW
Have you tried H1000 or H4831?
I am currently using RL-22, Federal 215M primer and 180 AB's. It is working OK but I am looking to squeak all the accuracy I can out of this rifle.
Does anyone have any proven "go to" loads for the 300 wm?
RL-17 has about the same burn rate as IMR 4350. I switched a couple of years ago as I was getting better velocity and the same great accuracy. If it is in your local store, ya might give it a try. CW
Yote Smoker, I agree a 7 short mag is a very good round.
However the boneheads who make rifles these days do not agree. Most rifle mfg. do not chamber in the 7 short mag any longer, may be a thing of the past. CW
Good choice, they have very good glass.
I went in to our local Sportsman Warehouse and they let me take several rifle scopes outside to try them out in "real" light. I will tell you the Zeiss had the best glass by some measure... according to my eyes. CW
A 7-08 is a great round, no doubt about it. I have one and it is one of my favorite rifles. I was just looking for a cartridge with a little more oomph while keeping the recoil down. I think with the speed of the 270 WSM it will deliver a 140 about 300-400 fps faster than my 7-08 will. On a big...
I just completed the tally.
The wifely one drew a bear tag and a 4th season either sex elk tag.
Oldest daughter drew a 4th season bull tag.
Youngest son drew a archery deer and a late cow.
Oldest Grand Daughter drew a black-powder doe and a 2 season unit 61 cow.
I drew a first rifle bull .
Looks...
My son shoots 77.6 grs of H1000 behind a 185 Berger.... out of his 300 WM.
Last year I was with him when he dropped a cow elk at around 300 yards, sort of a bang flop ordeal.
I have to say if you want to salvage every ounce of meat try a different bullet. We had your basic 30 cal entry hole and...
